Probably looking at a set of 2.1 PC speakers for around £50, anything to improve the tinny sound coming from his TV at a reasonable price.

Go 2.0 on the used market that's what I've done for my dad.

Denon UPO 99 minature pre-amp + PA £20
Gale Gold Monitors £26

All sourced locally on eBay collection only, there's tonnes of stuff. There's also T-Class amps available for ultra miniature installs. Just buy with a good known brand like NAD, Cambridge, Pioneer, Teac, Sherwood or Yamaha. You might be able to sell the idea of buying one with a tuner built in, saves having the TV switched on.

Shall take a gander on Ebay.

Just go to your nearest richer sounds. You will probably need an amp unless your tv has speaker terminals or you buy amplified speakers. Listen to the lit you are about to buy AND something much cheaper and something more expensive so you know what difference money makes to the sound. You don't need to buy from them at the end of the listen, eBay can still work!

Anyone know is these would do a job, plugged into the headphone socket. He's not after anything special, just something to improve the horrific sound on the TV

Would be OK, also seen these cheaper too

I think its wise to get a remote control for the speakers because some TVs only have a fixed output for the headphone socket (adjustable in the menu)
