Why ext is it for ya laptop ?

I run some Pioneer drives in my own caddies eg some sumvision ones ..or some ide adapters to usb / sata to usb adapters.

I have not tried my liteon etau108 or my Samsung SE-S084C yet for xbox backup writes. but the liteon is supposed to be a good one for it however if you have a laptop drive already eg slimline they are not the best suited for backups over a desktop full size version

Thanks for this.

Yeah, the slimline one on my Vaio won't write anything, I've only just managed to get it to read after uninstalling and re-installing in device manager. It's a Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850s (FW 1.60) that gets bad ratings every where, and impossible to even find firmware to see if that helps.

Can you pop a disc in load up ImgBurn switch to write mode and copy the log so I can see the exact model number as reported in ImgBurn // like below

I 12:20:45 ImgBurn Version 2.5.1.3 Beta started!
I 12:20:45 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 3)

Download ImgBurn from www.imgburn.com mirror 6. When installing go slow with the mouse clicks and untick the top box when you get to the ask toolbar installer (this way you just install ImgBurn)

Can you also post the model number of your laptop.

It probably will report as DVD-RAM UJ-850s just want to see what ImgBurn reports. I have version 1.61 firmware but is for UJ-850u (might be in same range) just need a little research to see if that could be used and help fix what's wrong with yours. (try a CD lens cleaner CD see if that helps in the meantime)

Edit whilst your in ImgBurn as well goto tools / Filter Driver Load Order and press copy to clipboard then paste into a reply on here like below

Here is 1.61 firmware listed on Sony support site http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/info/info.aspx?l=en_GB&url=VAIO/Updates/EP0000144835.exe&m=VGN-N38Z_W&ip=EP0000144835.htm

Don't' install it just yet though until I see the exact model number (it seems that vaio VGN-N xxxxxx ship with the Matshita drive) but once i have exact number I could advise / research further.

remove Upper Class Filter: SiRemFil and lower filter PxHelp20 then reboot you can do this from the tools filter driver load order in ImgBurn

Thanks for this help, it's appreciated. I've just been reading this thread re filter drivers for my dvd. It says how to uninstall them in the registry but nothing about how to install them?

You don't need em (when the upper and are are installed via various (hardware / software they can simply become corrupt) they are designed to be like a pass thru filter but can go wrong and start blocking data)
#12
The DL MKM you have are 8x and the firmware you are using only allows 2.4x and 4x (I usually burn my 8x mkm-003 @ 2.4x but I have hundreds of writers and know which ones work etc) the Matshita drive might not like the disc's @2.4x or 4x if you have just been trying them @2.4x try 1 @4x see if that works (I know they are expensive)

You might also have better luck get Verbatim MKM-001-00 2.4x speed instead of the MKM-003-00 8x

Strange. Lists it as a Matshita in device manger, imgburn and everywhere else. Ive just downloaded Everest and that says the same? Iv removed the filters. What would you recommend now? Will the filter drivers install automatically on reboot? Shall I try the 1.61 FW?

PS, sorry, you keep posting answers as I'm typing the questions, lol!

I had a dvd writer than was suppose to be single layer burning only as well. Quick firmware upgrade gave me dual layer burning.

But remember, be careful when upgrading firmware. Quite easy to brick a dvd drive. I was doing one for a friend and ended up bricking it after some wrong settings. Couldnt even flash it to the backup of the drive I had took.

Ended up just spending the £15 and buying a new dual layer burning from Play.com

Well, upgraded FW and rebooted. It started to burn this time but failed at 7%. Looks like it's an external one needed.

post the log for that burn and was that attempt @4x or 2.4 (which do you usually use)

You'll need Verbatim MKM-001-00 to stand any chance with that writer.

You might be able to get a cheapo DL to work (one that is supposed to be burnt at 2.4x) as in so the writer you have has a write strategy for it.

I have no MKM-003-00 discs' to try on one of my usb external eg the liteon I linked to @ start of thread but will now try one of my Verbatim MKM-001-00 @2.4x to see how it does. (will take over and hour though before I can post log etc )

I wouldnt burn with a laptop drive, i've worn 2 out burning less than 20 discs. I bought a freecom drive from scan, but when the newer tacky a-one discs came out it wouldnt read them. I bought a pioneer d116 i think and took the freecom drive out and put the pioneer inside it,, still going strong.

Samsung SE-S084B

Should be fine I think?
#26
I have the later Version the Samsung SE-S084C

I hooked it up to test as I mentioned in first post not tried DL media on either the Liteon or the Samsung (the Sammy is writing to ritek s-04 at minute.for has been for last 14 minutes

I'm not being funny but I did also mention in first post you would be better off getting a fullsize desktop burner (in external) like the lg as Laptop drives are really picky and you do have one of the worst in your laptop the matshita 850.

The link you provided to the Samsung is for the version I have eg the C not the B

http://www.myce.com/review/samsung-se-s084c-external-dvd-writer-review-22442/Conclusion-10/

It may well be they are in essence the same drive. I would guess not but I'm not always right.

No it's a slimline model powered only by your usb port

Ha, unbelievable! It's finished and working on the Aone 8x burned @2.4!

Anyone want to buy a Samsung external DVD writer? lol
#32
Which is basically a laptop drive in an external box.

Not a bad price that you paid though.

It will be ok/ish but laptop/slimline drives have poor firmware support over their desktop counterparts are slower eg 8x (max) and therefore have somewhat iffy write strategies. As seen in the log below with write speeds of 3x 4x 6x (3x is not a valid write on dvd dl+ although it was a succesful burn* (apparently)

Ah, I see.
Speed isn't really an issue for me. Anyway, I'll leave it sealed for now and see how my Aones continue with CloneCD. If its ok I'll flog the new one.
Thanks again for taking the time out to help me.

Speed is not the problem. Media support is more important and the write strategies used to control the burn.

These are them for the Samsung SE-804B - The dvd ram (as foum only allows 10k chars)

Ah, I see.
Speed isn't really an issue for me. Anyway, I'll leave it sealed for now and see how my Aones continue with CloneCD. If its ok I'll flog the new one.
Thanks again for taking the time out to help me.

The writing software has very little to do with the actual write or fail (unless the program is really badly written that is)

Hardware / media / drivers normally at fault for failed burns etc (eg the combination)
