To cut a long story short I have been conned into buying a car which has 81,000 miles on instead of 45,000. Anyway I am asking for a refund if the value and have been advised by trading standards to go by the book price. It is an 04 Renault Grand Scenic with sunroof and 6 cd changer. Not in great condition but OK and only had 1 month left of it's tax and MOT.
I don't really want too pay online to get a valuation when I know someone out there is sat next to one now and wants to be very helpful :-)
Thank you so much

My OH and his friend went to Wales to see it (we are in Birmingham) after seeing it on autotrader. He told us on the phone it was genuine 45,000 as advertised. He confirmed it again when they were down there. Stupid men looked at teh service book but didn't notice the huge writing that said the instrument panel had been changed. They were not shown the letter from renault that said it had been changed at 36,000 miles!!! Of course when they came back with it the first thing I did was look at the paperwork and noticed it. This now means we have to have cam belt changed etc.
We paid over the odds for it as it ticked all the boxes. The colour I wanted the siunroof and 6 cd changer and it was a 1.5 diesel. Paid £5500 but only also got £600 less px for my car that others had offered.
I had seen the exact same car from a bigger dealer who had offered me £3000 for my car and the other one was immaculate with 80,000 miles 112 months tax and mot for £5000 just up the road.....but I had wanted one with low mileage.
Trading standards agree with have a case and are going to pursue it criminally but I want to go down the civil side too. I have already wrote to him asking for a full refund but he has ignored me and I am not allowed to drive the car if I am asking for it all, it is also too much to go to small claims court so I need to claim back the difference.
It has also has to be a proper valuation from one of the main books (sorry can't remember the names of them, Glass??)

Why not just get a refund on it & go & buy a car you actually want ?

Who knows what else has happened to it in the past............

I'll get you a Glasses valuation now.

they will offer about 30 quid!, not a realistic price at all, better off finding something similar on autotrader or exchange&mart

sounds like a nightmare scenario, glasses guide or parkers guide are usually the standard

i would go for the value and more for the inconvenience and disruption on your life also

sounds like you could do with some professional legal advice from a solicitor tbh .......you could make it expensive for him

Is it a private seller ?

I was going down this route but I am not allowed to drive it whist waiting. He hasn't answered my original letter asking for this and as I work and have 3 children we can't cope with one car.

Connsumer direct have been great. They have told me exactly what to do and are also going to prosecute him under criminal law. It annoys me as we went to so much effort for it, and he must have known. All he had done is buy it from auction. He also told my OH he was going to sell our old car at aution for £2300 but he advertised it on his site for £3600!!!

Thank you everyone for your help

Yes, it was recorded. I know he got the letter coz he phoned us but only asked us for proof as he wants to follow it up from where he bought it. Can't remember where off the top of my head but it was South Wales just off the motorway

Unlike others on here I did try that last week but to get an accurate amount they ask you to put in your mileage etc and then charge you £3.49. I am only asking someone to look in a book and tell me how much it is

Use the one on the Vauxhall site its free and uses the trade guide

The Which one I linked to allows for the mileage calculation (and they also publish this info in a monthly book). Glasses is more of a trade book, if you are looking for a part ex price (which will be more in the favor of the dealer in your case).

Thanks but I have been advised by consumer direct to use parkers or glass guide. I may have to go to court on this one so want to make sure that I can quote specifics etc. I have to have a watertight case as I do not want him getting away with it. All I am after is someone to look in one of the books and give me a trade price for the value of the car. I want it as low as possible so that I can claim back the difference. I am sure that there must be at least one person on here who has a copy??!! Please.....

If you want it to stand up in court is it not worth paying the £3 on Parkers to save him getting out of the case on the grounds that you valued your car via someone on an internet forum?

It will be fine just to quote that it is that price in May 10 book.
