Does it have to be good people? Only, Pol Pot and Hitler spring to mind as men matching your criteria - Pol Pot with his drive toward Year Zero, and Hitler with his mission to create a German super-race by getting rid of everyone that wasn't up to spec. Exceptionally twisted men, t'be sure, but their motives were not entirely negative. Although, I'm not sure how well an essay extolling the virtues of Hitler's policy on murdering children with special needs will go down, so you might find it safer to stick with one of the more palletable figures.

Don't think J.F.K. is the best option...he was a very dodgy figure

Edgar Mevers, there is a film about his life with James earl Jones starring as Mevers.

Norman Borlaug would be a suitable candidate I would suggest.

I have a feeling history will cite Bill Gates but i guess it depends on the next 25+ years.

Lastly is someone whom you and I probably owe our very existence to and I doubt very much you will have ever heard of him.
Take a bow MR. Stanislav Petrov !!

Not read through all this but I would have suggested Mandela at first glance.

'One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter' - apparently!!

As an ex-serviceman with a few tours of NI under my belt I look at Adams and McGuinness and wonder!!
