Can I make an external drive bootable?

£0.00 @
Slight change to the question, can I make a USB drive bootable as I can't write dvds at the moment? Could I install windows this way? Without losing all the info already on my usb drive?

I used CD Burner XP to burn a windows disc.. just opened the program, put the ISO in the burn list and pressed burn.

No you cant drag and drop them you have to create a bootable disk. All dvd copying programs will do this for you. You need to select the 'create a dvd' and it will make the boot files for you then just add the files (make sure you have uncompressed them first)

I don't have an ISO, if I did it would be easy.

I have a RAR which is basically a copy of the dvd. I have a funny feeling if I just burn it as it is then it won't be bootable.

I'll give it a go though, only waste a few mins and a dvd.

That sounds like it, so if I create a bootable dvd with the windows files on it then it'll know to start the windows set up?

Any idea where in Nero Express I can choose to make it bootable?
#7
Think I've found it, doesn't appear to be in smartstart but if you play round for a while it appears in a similar Nero program.

I'm going to throw this sodding thing out the window in a minute!

Why won't it burn my dvds?

(1) Yes
(2) Yes
(3) Not likely

Other question would be, "can my computer boot a USB drive?".

HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool is what you need to make it bootable - you can then copy over the various system files needed (including small linux distros/live images)

I've fixed the problem with the dvds. They write now, problem with the dvd burner, using another one now.

Have made a bootable dvd with windows setup on it, but it boots to dos and won't let me run setup.exe as it's not a dos program?

Any ideas?

Have I made the right sort of bootable disk?

Ok, what windows setup are you trying to burn in the first place? im presuming your original disk is too damaged to install from yes.

Your bootable dvd with windows setup sounds like it is incomplete.

is your pc capably of using a usb device PRIOR to loading of windows? If so it can probably install from a pen drive, if not, you cant.

I will try and help as much as possible, but im just trying to get straight in my head what we are trying to accomplish here :)

No original cd as came pre-installed. Gone corrupt so downloaded same version. Trying to burn to dvd to install. Think I may be getting somewhere. Will report back in about half hour if not working.

Sounds like a PITA if you don't have a working DVD drive to install XP, I found a guide but you might have seen:

http://www.vandomburg.net/installing-windows-xp-from-usb/

Ignore the bit about reformatting the drive, as you can install windows over a old copy and if the files weren't encrypted access the MyDocs of the old users. I had a similar problem on friends laptop, but didn't think of using a USB to launch the windows setup.

All seems to be working now, have managed to burn the setup files from the ISO using cdburner xp (nero wouldn't do it). Should be finished by morning!

Thanks for everyone's help.
