Can I use a wireless ADSL router as a simple wireless router?

Hopefully not too silly a question but I wondered if I could use my ADSL wireless router to connect to a wired ethernet port to act as a wireless router or do I need a new box?

I managed to do it but I can't remember how. It needs some configuration and won't be a plug and play affair.

Can't find anything on Google apart from people saying it can't be done.

I recently bought a netgear wireless ADSL router to plug into my bosses netgear to give a better range, plugged in and changed no settings and away it went!

sometimes though you do need to fiddle with settings to get the set up going....
