Sounds like an airlock, has anything changed on the water pipes lately?

We havent touched the pipes...

If the water has been cut at the mains the hot taps will still run if you have a storage tank. Also if you have mixer taps both hot and cold will flow. I would turn any immersion heaters off in case you have emptied the tank.

Its not your lucky day is it? Looks like someone has swapped your keyboard keys around too. :whistling: (j0king)

Have you tried running the cold upstairs for any length of time, you say they are running, but even after a mains shut off there will be some residual water in the pipes.

Do you have kids? Is there anyway they could have turned your stop cock, or the supply taps to any water system tanks? Does sound as though it could be an airlock as said above though, have you noticed any odd noises from your pipes lately?

Are you saying one tap is not working?
If it is a mixer the washer may be jammed in the closed position and not releasing water. they sometimes do this.
I'm sure you need a plumber to look at this.

If it is an airlock and you have a mixer tap in the kitchen (here's where it gets messy)

Get a towel
Cusp your hand over the end of the tap, with the towel over your hand and taps. (if your mixer has a spray type fitting you may need to remove that)
Open both the hot and cold taps fully for about 30 seconds.
This should blow hot water back up the cold pipe and remove the airlock.

Obviously don't do this if the hot water is too hot to handle.

Sounds like your mains is cut off. Hot taps and upstairs cold will be off of what is left in your tank, which won't be refilling as you use it. I'd go ask a neighbour if theirs is the same which would mean maybe there are works in your area and they shut it off while replacing a pipe or whatever. I assume no one in your house would have switched it off as a joke or by accident, usually under the sink.

I've seen a plumber do similar but use the rubber end of a walking stick over the tap as they come in various sizes and have a snug fit.

Flush the loo, if the cistern fills up your mains water is on, if it doesn't then it's off, and you'll have to contact your local water company to let them know.

Trust me, I'm a plumbing inspector :-)

worry over, the man 2 doors down switched the mains off as his toilet is leaking ......

I found this the other week, the cold tap thingy under the sink had been pushed the wrong way, probably me stuffing the washing powder box back in (not that I admitted it at the time!) Could just be something simple, make sure you check before paying for a plummer..........Hope it's not too serious!!

reason u get hot water is because its water in ur tank alredy stored. so go easy on it. wont last forever!
