Can someone help me with installing my printer?

I have a HP 1020 printer.

My mistake, I already plugged it into the USB so now my comp isn't recognising it.

Have downloaded the drivers from HP website but don't know what to do next.

I have tried going through the 'add printer' process but it won't give me the option to use my USB port, just the COM ports etc.

Is there a way i can make my comp 'forget' that it has been connected to my printer already? I am on Windows ME

reboot your computer without the printer switched on.

Load the printer drivers from the printer disk provided.

Switch your printer on when asked to do so. or when the drivers have loaded.

Thanks for replying.

I haven't got a disk, I just downloaded the drivers from their website.

One of the icons has got the HP logo, so I assume that that is the one that I need to launch, but it just ignores me when I try to open it.

When I go through the 'add printer' process, it does not give me the option to use this icon and won't give me the option to select USB as the connector

USB ports are listed as COM Ports aren't they? "COM" as in any data communication port? I dunno but I think so.
You could check your System Hardware from the control panel and find out which COM port your printer is connected to.
Can't check any of this due to being on a mac but I think I remember it like that.

Isn't a com port the 'trapezium' shape one with lots of holes/pins?

I downloaded it and it downloaded as an application file, which I had to unzip.

That's as far as I have got, as I can't open the 'HP' file

what folder did you unzip it to?

is there a file in that folder called 'setup.exe' or maybe there is a readme.txt file in there ?

You say you don't know anything about comps, I don't even know how to do a system restore!

I haven't a clue if this would work, but would I lose documents that I saved today if I did that? I have been helping my sister with her Uni work all day and I would curl up and die if lost it!

no need for a system restore.

system restore, you go to start >all programs>accessories>system tools and in there system restore

I haven't had any other printers installed.

Think I will just have to hand everything over to my lovely OH and let him fix it for me.

Means I will have to go 'cold turkey' from HUKD tomorrow then, though - is it worth it?

Not always the case.
You can have more than one printer installed on a PC.

What we need to do is to Install the drivers for this particular printer.

i know but got a hp deskjet at xmas and first thing it told me on the instructions was to uninstall any other printers. never read them tho and spent best part of a day wondering why kept getting error msgs during the installation.
as alast resort aand after googling for hrs took them out the cellophane, read them, uninstalled my epson and by jove it worked.
