Can someone help regarding 5.1 amps?

Mistakenly it seems i have bought an amp or whatever you call it (well a DVD player, that outputs in 5.1 with the speakers and everything.) but it doesnt seem to have inputs for a 5.1 signal (no optical or coaxial i think its called) so it only plays 5.1 from a dvd in the player. No good for my 360.

Now the speakers and sub which come with it are top notch for what i want, i just want the full 5.1 with the 360.

So in short im just after an amp that will allow me to do this am i correct?

Can someone show me what i need to buy? Am looking at spending maybe 100-150 tops if possible

This is a great unit for the money:

What plugs do your speaker wires have? If they have propitiatory plugs that you need to cut off to get the bare wire that you need to connect them to an AV receiver, then this may be a bad idea as you will never be able to use them with the original DVD unit again.

Do you have a Pioneer all in one DVD system (your problem sounds familiar!)

Also check the specs of your system to ensure your subwoofer is not a passive one. An AV receiver will need a subwoofer with a built in amplifer, so a passive sub will never work.

its a sanyo all in one system. the wires are just two bare wires for each speaker, black and red. Sorry, im not clued up on this much!!

The sub connects to the one i have now in the same way as the speakers do, two wires, red and black, no other connections

I got this amp in my conservatory and I agree it's a decent piece of equipment (albeit an ugly thing to look at!).
Check that your speakers are powerful enough to cope with this amp though as it's pretty powerful.

What's the total output on this unit? I also have one of these (confined to the wardrobe) and I know that the speakers with mine would NEVER cope with the Sony amp.

Ok, don't worry ;-)

To be honest, it may be better to start again and get a AV receiver and speaker package from scratch. Sell the one you have complete to recoup some cash.

I don't know your specific system, but it doesn't sound like your speakers are worth keeping if you are going to the expense to upgrade to an AV receiver.

The receiver I already listed is good value, and so is this Yamaha speaker package, including an active sub:

A separates system has many advantages over an all in one system.

Forget it with those speakers! Need to do as suggested above and start over. Can you make use of this in another room?

Sell the whole thing complete, and consider the amp and speaker package I listed.

Of course if you have some spare cash at the moment, then you can always spend it bit more and get a better sounding result by going for some higher end kit.

Put it in your wardrobe like I did with mine! :-D

Once you've heard the difference in a seperates system compared to that "cinema in a box" system, you'll never go back. That's Why I got four different seperates systems and a wardrobe full of redundant a/v equipment!

Yep, that'll do. Just need some decent speakers to complement it now and a subwoofer.

That would be what you need yeah. Get some half decent speaker cable from a local electrical store (not the flimsy bell wire type, but there again, don't go mad, buy something about 50p - 60p a metre).
I don't know much about games consoles but it should have an optical out on it. If it does then this'll work fine with your new system.

BTW. You could wait for a while on the Ebay item, no bids yet so you might get it for £49.99
