Hiya i was wondering if you could help me :)
My Df passed his driving test on Friday, We have a 2001 Vauxhall Astra club 16v and im trying to look for some information as to
a.) Roughly how much it costs to fill up the tank we have only put the odd 10 quid in so far
b.) How many miles we can get out of a full tank

We easily have 15 quid to put towards petrol every week as this is what he was paying for bus fares, so im trying to work out whether this will be enough for him to do the 3/4 miles to work and back everyday and the odd trip at the wkend for us and the kids? Just want to get a rough idea as to how much this car is going to cost us every month so i can rearange my budget
Thank you in advance

Jo xxxx

P.s Just to add this is purely about petrol i have already accounted for all other costs of the car

It's likely to be an 11 gallon tank, so £5 per gallon x 11 gallons = £55

How many miles you'll get depends on a lot of things, but if you got 30mpg average x 11 gallons = 330 miles, but you could get more if you do mostly motorway driving.

Is he doing 3 or 4 miles a day to work, or is it 0.75 miles to work ?

lets hope it 3 to 4 miles per day lol!

£15 = 3 gallons max so expect about 30mpg urban driving so say 4 miles each way to work = 8 miles x 5 days = 40 miles leaving about 50 miles for the weekend.

of course this is petrol only and a car costs an awful lot more than that cost.

A rough example say of £200 insurance, £150 car tax, £150 MOT and about £150 general repairs if you are lucky = £650 per year = £13 per week

that leaves you enough for £2 of petrol per week = 15 miles so even just using the car to get to work will still leave your DF (?) needing to spend more than the cost of the bus fares.

Hi Kyalion.
He is doing 3 miles each way so basically 6 miles a day that he HAS to do.
Thank you so much for giving me a rough idea

Df (darling fiance) prob a term more used on Mother and baby forums

Its purely petrol prices, already have sorted all of the other bills out :)

So basically 50 miles for "luxury" driving at the wkend roughly?

yep, although I thought luxury driving disappeared a few decades ago. I hate going on the roads these days.

Petrol 1.8 16v Astra will get you between 400-450 miles out of a full tank (long distance driving)

You'll get about 300-350 out of casual driving, it depends on the length of your journeys

Around £50 for a full tank of petrol.
