Hi, just wondered if someone could please give me any advice on a problem i`ve got with my laptop?
I have a compaq presario f500 laptop running vista home premium and it keeps freezing, i can`t get it to boot up. Doesn`t get as far as login page, the mouse pointer freezes and none of the keys work, it runs for less than a minute before it does it and i have to hold the power key to turn it off.
When i try to start it, it goes to system repair, but doesn`t have chance to finish before it freezes again.
I`ve tried to roll it back and tried to reset to factory settings but it always freezes before it has chance to finish.
I don`t have any backup discs either.
Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

See if you can start in Safe Mode

To get into the Windows Vista Safe mode, as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
Note: With some computers if you press and hold a key as the computer is booting you will get a stuck key message. If this occurs, instead of pressing and holding the "F8 key", tap the "F8 key" continuously until you get the startup menu.

Hi, thanks for replying, i just tried to start it in safe mode, pressed safe mode and it went to startup repair again then froze. tried it again and got to the black screen with the bar at the bottom, with microsoft corporation under it and the yellow blocks have stopped moving in the bar. :-(

failing to boot in safe mode is poor show, possibly a minor disk error but with no vista disk to boot from to repair the error you're pretty suck i'm afraid

Yes, I agree. There is obviously an error on the disc. I'd take it to be formated if you are not confident about trying yourself, and maybe it wont let you get to that stage anyway.

To be honest I think it wont work if you try to do it yourself. There ought to be some computer shops near you (not PCWorld). They should only charge you around £40.00.
