Hi

Another possible factor is at least 3 opposing sides - such as in generals GLA,China and USA - so each side is different

me and 2 friends play generals often and we want a bit of a change

what do you think?

I'd definitely take a look at Dawn of War which is available cheap, doesn't need that much horsepower to run and is a great RTS game. The original started off with four sides - Space Marines, Chaos, Eldar and Orks. Winter Assault then added the Imperial Guard, the next expansion pack Dark Crusade was bigger adding Tau and the Necrons as well as a few new units for each of the existing sides. The final expansion was Soulstorm which added another two sides, the Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar.

With all the expansion packs you have a huge 9 sides although I've not been impressed with Soulstorm which is buggy and there's still no patch for. If you can get Dark Crusade Anthology (which includes the seven races) for cheap I'd definitely give it a go, the sides are varied and the animation is fantastic - I never tire of watching the battles.

Incidentally I'm a big fan of Generals as well, great game - my brother and I often played it over LAN, Dawn of War is one of our other favourites.

Sins of a Solar Empire, definitely one of the best space RTS I have ever played.

the hardware requirement is not high but it looks absolutely stunning and the map is huge (range from a solar system with few planets to several solar systems across the galaxy).

shame it doesn't have a single player campaign though, just skirmishes. But you can see the game focuses mainly on the multi-player aspect of the game. Download the demo fofm gamershell and see for yourself.

While the Warhammer aspect appeals to fans, it doesn't cloud the game in any way as it's a solid RTS game.

I was never a huge Warhammer guy, but DoW is a fine game. And since it's been going since 2004 not a difficult to run game.
If your PC is up to a bit more, try out Company of Heroes. Or if you want something of a more modern flavor World in Conflict is excellent and will scale to a low-end vidcard.

i tried a demo of DOW
it seems ok if a little complex compared to good old C+C

may take some getting used to... but i will keep trying
