Can't get web-mail on new pc. Help needed!

Hi guys, hoping you can help.

My dad can't get into his web-mail (or the same account using vista live mail) using his new Dell pc. It was fine for a couple of weeks then suddenly won't allow access, either through live mail or web-mail.

I can get into the web-mail from my pc fine (from my house) so it's not a problem with the mail server.

So, is the problem with his pc or his internet connection (orange broadband with livebox)? I've never heard of something where a specific web-mail wouldn't work because of a problem with a pc or net connection. Everything else works just fine (including other web-mails and vista live mail boxes). The pc has been in for weeks and the problem has only just started in the last few days, nothing has changed to trigger the problem as far as I'm aware.

Is there likely to be some problem with the firewall on the pc, or the livebox? Or are Orange blocking it for some reason? Would seem strange that Orange would block a specific web-mail page!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Have you tried a restore point on it? He could have had something rogue self install on it.

I haven't Sy, I'm going to try a different pc on the same internet connection to see if it's the net or his pc.

I had this problem on a Dell PC when I tried accessing web mail in IE7, but it worked fine using Firefox. It was something about particular ads being seen as possible threats. Has he tried another browser to see if that works?

Good suggestion, he hasn't.

The thing is it doesn't work in live mail either, well it sends but won't receive. The settings are definately right. Can't understand why it doesn't work!

Take one problem at a time, the live mail issue sounds more like settings but the web mail??, tried clearing temp internet files? and double check if using wireless he is not logged on through neighbours router, that would allow receive but not send.

Settings should be fine, they haven't been changed.

Haven't tried clearing temp files, shouldn't stop live mail working though.

Not using wireless.

I think it could be Orange, but why would it start now? Have they just changed something?

Also seems strange that they would block a specific web-mail page? I guess it's maybe picking it up as dodgy and blocking it? But it's not dodgy, just web-mail!

It could be problems with their local service..........Virgin informed me they are working on it and it should be fixed by morning. Told me i could change what proxy i connect through if i wanted an instant fix but that sounded too much hassle so i just disconnected and went onto the other connection.

Does your dad live far away? Could be worth borrowing his PC and trying it through your connection.

I'm going to try his other pc on his connection first, if his other pc works then I know it's the computer. If it doesn't then I know it's the connection.

Good idea. If you find it's the connection then ring them for another proxy to reroute you to the nearest working exchange. :)

Hopefully it's a local issue like you say.

Really can't work out anything else it could be, the rest of the net works fine, just this one mail account. I know it works elsewhere and it sends alright via live mail so it obviously can make a connection to it although not to receive or get into web-mail.

It's definately a strange one. Recently i've been getting a lot of problems with Virgin doing similar things which is why i've now taken out Sky. Won't miss Virgin when they turn it off.

Never tryed Orange though.

Tried a seperate computer on the same connection and it's still not working! Have cleared cache and cookies and flushed dns and still not working.

Apparently I have to get Orange to flush the dns now, wish me luck!!!

Ok, starting to get somewhere. Have tried the webpage by going via the IP address, and it works!!! As I understand it when I put in a domain name the DNS on Orange's server converts that to the correct IP address, kinda like a phone book. But in this case I'm assuming that it's not working correctly seeing as putting the IP address in directly will take me to the web site.

Orange have come back to me eventually to say they can't find a problem so they can't fix it. They said to phone back if it gets any worse.

I guess I'll just have to put up with it but really annoyed that they can waste my time like this and just say they can't fix it!

yes you are right about the dns procedure, though if you have a router your request actually goes through that,
ie your machine sends the dns request to the router and the router changes your local address to its internet address and waits for the return packets, when they come back it reverses the procedure.
With this in mind have you tried a new router?, also consider programming the ip address of the dns server and gateway directly into the pc instaed of using the dhcp.

Will take a look, I haven't tried a different router but the current one was working for a couple of months before this problem started. Orange admitted that they are having problems with the DNS eventually so I'm pretty sure the problem is on their side.

Orange tried getting me to put the DNS addresses straight into my pc and it stopped the internet working completely so we changed it back!
