I would also like to know this is I have the same setup so have a free bump

Short answer is yes.
I use TVERSITY (a free download, search google). There is small amount of setup to do but basically xbox uses TVERSITY from your computer to stream the movies, you will need to tick the box that transcodes ALL files or else your xbox will keep trying to update the codec (which you know it cannot do being banned).

Also make sure you change the settings on your xbox so you DO NOT sign-in when on the network.
#3
yeah don't give it DNS eg the gateway ip of router etc just an ip from your network.

Edit ... Well for no internet . So that might not be what you asked :lol

PS3 Media Server is also very good, and imo much better than TVERSITY... and yes it streams to xbox 360 also, and can transcode on the fly if needed too.

yeah i've got tversity already, i just wasn't sure if you could stream without being signed in, so it's just a case of selecting an option in the settings not to sign in to xbox live.

I know when i try to play files of a flash drive it tells me to sign if for the codec so i thought this would be the same?

When you're using flash pen and trying to play mp4 etc and it tells you to sign in you can get round it.

You would need to create a new profile. The optional media update may need to be downloaded again (so chance of ban when connected to live with new silver profile/gamertag) it will then allow an offline profile to play media from flash pen without connecting to live)

I had to do that on one of my 360's and chances are on my newest Mw2 console will have to repeat this(fiasco) to allow flash pen to play offline on this console after transferring 120 hd content t o 250 gb. I had created a gamertag called offline usb.

I did have to download media update again to get this working offline again. eg not signed in

No, this is slightly wrong , the optional media update applies itself to the console, not a profile, he doesnt even need to sign into a profile to stream video over the network.. i do it all the time. The media update may need to be re-downloaded in certain circumstances, i think when moving a hdd to a different console, or transfering data over, otherwise he shouldn't need to do this.

Sorry but it is not wrong. Other wise the other 6 profiles 3 xbox live ones including my xbox live gamertag Dontasciime would be able to play mp4 from flash drive whilst being offline which it can't even though the optional media update is present on the hard drive and no matter how many times you download it under that profile it will not allow mp4, divx to be played from a flash pen/hard drive whilst being offline (unless as I mentioned create a new profile is done specifically to challenge the bug in m$ dash/drm)

But then I mean something other than you think . I never mentioned anything other than what I did. EG I never said he needed to sign in to stream

You should try it yourself. You may have a 360 that does it fine. One of mine does the rest don't (until you apply the fix)

Ok get a flash pen put an mp4 file on it go to your video libary and tell it to play from portable device whilst being signed in , see if it plays IT should.

Now sign out of that profile and see if you can play file (you might be able to like I used to be able to on a few of my 360's but then you might find you get the codec error telling you to sign in and download media update etc EVEN though you have it and have downloaded it a few times :lol stupid m$) Yours might be fine but lots of people are not after transfer kit or ms dash update e drm issues.

yeah thnaks but that won't work unless i sign into xbox live and i don't want to do that as i'll get the console banned.

anyone know where the option is so it doesn't automatically sign into xbox live so i can just stream it, i can't find it anywhere in the settings

You dont need to sign in with a profile to stream... which is what i have been saying

But, if you insist on signing in..
There isn't an option to stop signing into live, way around it is to disconnect your network feed before you sign in, then reconnect it afterwards

I said slightly.... as in, ok yeah you messed yours up, but thats irrelevant to what we are talking about here. The media update doesnt just decide to mess up randomly.

Furthermore, you keep mentioning about signing in, You DO NOT need to sign in at all to play videos! or even play most games!

Xbox licensing works like this:

When you download content, 2 different things can happen.

If your xbox live account has NEVER downloaded this particular content before, then a license is stored in the license descriptor within the content itself and also a matching license is stored within the consoles flash.. pairing it together if you like..

Without license info on a consoles flash, content will never play offline.

Here's an example:

You have 2 xboxs # 1 and xbox #2

you download something for the 1st time using your xbox live account on xbox #1.., for most things, each and every profile on that console can now use this content, offline or online, because the license is stored on the flash of the console itself, and it doesnt need to check xbox live to know you are authorized to use it.

If you move your profile to xbox #2, and download the SAME content again using the SAME live account, it will skip the flash writing of the license! this is to prevent people licensing things on lots of xboxs and cloning profiles to circumvent DRM!

Xbox #2 needs to be connected to live from now on, for this account and console combination, to verify you paid for the content, or have permission to use it.. If you return to xbox #1 you are free to use it offline as you did before.

To bypass this, you simply need to make a NEW profile, and download this SAME content again on xbox #2!!, so that xbox live knows its needs to write license info to the consoles flash! - Once that is done, you don't even need to sign in, you can use that content on xbox #2 for any profile, on or offline to your hearts content!

So to sum it all up, for EVERY individual piece of download content, and for EVERY xbox live account, microsoft only let you store an offline license within the xbox consoles flash ONCE! so that means one console only per account for each piece of DLC. unless you use the DRM tool to transfer your licenses over!

This is what is happening with the media update for most people,

to fix your error, do this, create a new xbox live silver account, and download the media update again from live, now sign out of live, and out of the gamertag if you wish... then try to play your mp4 files, even turn console off and back on, and dont bother siging in, and it will still work.

If you are downloading the media update using a profile that you have used before, on a different xbox, it will NEVER work offline!

If you ever delete that profile you used to download it with, then you may need to download it again..

I never said you need to sign in to stream

There is an option to stop signing into live on mine though.

Also this is mp4 I made myself so I never downloaded it from M$

It is also not user error that this messes up

The bit with the silver account is the fix as I said above.

So I was only ever offering OP the chance to get his files that he cannot play on the flash pen to work. vai the silver account fix(nothing else) (but that it might involve a ban, anyways it's a risk he has already said not willing to take)

Ah you can disable auto sign in,

1) Press Guide Button
2) Navigate to Settings Blade
3) Choose Profile
4) Auto Sign-In Option

This auto sign in option stops the profile signing in, if you sign in manually and you are connected to the net, and using a live account, it will still sign into xbox live, this is what i meant
#15
you could also do it without having dns in network settings as in not have them assigned AUTO so primary and secondary dns are ( 0.0.0.0 as you cannot get internet then)
