Can you get a landline without paying BT a connection charge?

A friend of mine had a BT landline in his g/f's name - she moved out and cancelled the line telling them there was no longer anyone living at the property. To reconnect they want £125 because they aledgedly have to reconnect it at the exchange. Does anyone know how to get a working landline of any description with any supplier without having to pay this kind of charge?
There is no cable available
All help appreciated

It doesn't, Virgin install their own phonelines in cabled areas.
#9
virgin only needs an active bt line if you are non cable areas

There's no way around the BT charge then, all other phone providers will require a BT line with line rental paid on it.

Take it gf's name was on the bill then ?

BT shouldnt charge you the full connection cost as thats for a new install that has never had a phone line installed. I beleive the reconnection charge is something like 70 pounds although i will try and dig out some info for you.

BFM

Edit...cant find the info i remember reading on that any more...says connection charge applies if no dialling tone is present, im presuming yours doesn't. Perhaps you can get through to complaints and ask why your phone has been cut off, then just say you wanted the bill payers name and account changed and you were told you had to disconnect and reconnect and that they had sorted it out now your phone has been cut off but not reconnected....see if that works

Haven't used these guys myself but saw it posted somewhere. Apparently they still use BT engineers but they are cheaper than BT. I am sure I have heard somewhere that BT will install a line for £29.99 but you have to sign up for an 18 month contract and have a call package. Not sure of all the details but I am sure someone on here will know about it.

Several companies can install lines for you, the one above for example, lusnet can also. Ring the likes of sky, aol, talk talk. They should all have the facility to install/reactivate an exisitng line. Does the line thats in there have a dial tone on it?
#16
Wernt there some way of getting it back via sky or something........ ill have a look for you
#18
you could use tiscali for your phone line?

For Sky, Aol and Talk Talk you still need an active BT landline.

Wrong, local loop unbundling LLU allows other licensed operators to install equipment in the BT exchange and use BT's copper network to deliver there services to you. I'm a Openreach/BT engineer. There are tons of companies now you can pay line rental to instead of BT. All LLU will move you from BT to there own equipment, only a handfull at the moment offer full installs.

There is a way calmacuk... :)

Had the same problems when switching from Virgin media but Tiscali does BT line installation for Free (using BT engineer) as long as you agree a 12 month contract.

i work for BT and normally there is only a charge if the line has been inactive for over 6 months, is this the case? alo to get £30 connection you need to sign up for 18 months on the phone line without special offers, basically option 1 is free evening and weekend calls,

ill quite happily check if there is a charge at work tmrw, maybe someone in the call center is tryng to make extra commision. if so will need the address

BT charge £30 for installation provided an 18 month contract is agreed. Tiscali does the same (£30 standard installation with or without a BT line) on a 12 month contract. Tiscali packages start from £9.99 / month (phone line rental + 8mb max BB) which increases to £14.99 after 3 months. So, if anyone is looking to go for BT to save installation charges, Tiscali option is better value. :)

having moved 3 times in 3 years ive had all the experience of these lovely 124.99 connection charges i was told when i moved in we needed to pay it (fair enough nothing in life is free) when i moved i was told i had to pay it again (inactive line etc) but with a bit or argument over the phone it was refunded. and now we are moving on saturday and we have to pay it again, but ill try the arguement front if not im getting bt broadband through work they give you £50 cashback right now so that at least will take the edge of it.

Its not been inactive for over 6 months - just about 8 weeks i think. bill was in gf's name. dial tone is there.
I have given him all the info from here and bt website and sky - not tiscali yet as ive only jsut read that bit and he was going to rhone them again. He can dial 1471 but not 100 or 150 or any normal number
sounds to me like someone having a bad day in the call centre. the £29.99 wasnt even mentioned! rotten swines!!!!!!!!!! (the polite version!!!)
thank you all SO much - it really is much appreicated

dial tone is there you say?

Then you are already connected!
#27
You need to phone BT again. From what I know, £125 is only paid by the first person who connects to the BT phoneline. Since the gf already had a line there before she moved out, £125 should not be paid again. Get a hold of the past bill or even the phone number that was used is ok and make them do a check. Should not have to pay that £125 again.

Its a tragedy with BT... even if there is an existing BT line which isnt active for 6 months or more, BT still needs £125 to re-connect :)

Dial 17070 from the line, that'll give you the number quote that to BT, Tiscali, whoever and they may be able to do a deal. If it doesn't give you the number dial 147017070
