Can you give me reasons to buy a PSP?

ifyoudontask? Avatar

Im really thinking about buying a PSP, I travel quite a bit and have thought this would be great for passing the time, I would prob be using it to play some games and watch some movies.

Can anyone tell me anything else its good for? For example, how easy is it to transfer dvds to? what accessories would i need? can my PS3 be connected to it for any good reason? what extra memory would i have to get to store films /games on?

etc....

Thanks in advance

not much changes am afraid on the 3000.
Remote play when you have a psp and ps3, you can watch movies stored on ur ps3 remote via wifi on the psp anywhere you are in the world.

i personnally have my ps3 connected to my home pc which has a media server software, I have movies on my home pc which i watch on the ps3, and I can watch the movies remotely using the psp as well anywhere in the world, isnt that amazing?

That has to be one of the best things ive ever heard! Really daft question now, if i go on holiday would i have to leave the PS3 power on while i was away to get it to work?

An old "Phat" PSP has a better battery life, so I would look for one of those. The Slim & Lite is not worth spending anything extra on in my opinion. Forget the new one coming, it's hardly any different.

Pick up a 2nd hand Phat for about £50.

Put custom firmware on it, and get an 8GB memory stick for £20.99

http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Memory-Stick-PRO-DUO/Lexar/Lexar-8GB-Memory-Stick-PRO-DUO

You can then run games from the memory stick, and ripped films as well.

Are you sure phat has better battery life? I thought they improved it on S&L. More so for 3000.

althought the psp slim and lite is good -for travelling the battery isnt too good -- but the psp is a great console just make sure you get a phat mem stick for videos etc and make sure you buy the following games
LOCO ROCO
BURNOUT LEGENDS
EVERYBODIES GOLF
PES 2008
CRAZY TAXI FARE WARS
AND ONE OF THE GTA GAMES - BEST IS LIBERTY CITIES IMO

R.E Movie transfers i used a piece of software thats free online legally and it basically makes a film like south park into about 400mb with not much loss of quality

Very easy, you need the correct kit, someone on HUKD can help you out, will cost about £2 to send it to you, and then for you to send it back.

I have just checked, My sons "Phat" has 100% charge, and it has 7 hours 19 mins playing time left. My Slim & Lite has 99% charge, and has 5 hours 1 min playing time left.

You just have to set the remote play option to enabled on your PS3 and the PSP switches it on.

Its a bit of an exaggeration to say you can watch ps3 movies from your psp ANYWHERE in the world. You have to be in a wifi zone surely?

My PSP wouldnt allow movie playback from a BR disk in my PS3 as it said the movie was copyrighted :x

When my batteries about 1 hour left i change the brightness to low and i get another 1 odd hours out of it

Thanks for that, when i get the PSP (still not sure which type) is it easy to download games films to the memory stick? and how much does it roughly hold?

to the OP,

You can also listen to audio tracks (did I really read that you cannot even do this on a DS?).

You can store your photos on it. Put about 40 TV episodes on an 8GB disk!

not to mention, browse the internet on it.

Wow, pretty amazing, So let me get this right:

1, Buy a new/used Psp Phat /slim , buy a 8Gb memory stick.
2, contact a Hotukdeals member with the correct equipment to borrow it and get firmware,
3, connect Psp to Ps3.

All done?

What is the best way to download film / games to the memory stick?

install utorrent (google it) and then go to a torrent site (Isohunt) and there are thousands of films and games on there.

download a game and put it on your PSP in a folder called ISO

download an avi movie (about 700mb) and use PSP Video9 to convert it to your PSP format (size about 400mb)

Yes, I know that. You can also turn the volume down to save battery life, but the point I was making was that the "Phat" has a better battery life "Out the box".

The "Good" games range between about 200mb to 1600mb(1.6GB), so it depends. My son has about 15 games on his 8GB card, and a few films, and a few MP3's.

You can do this on a DS, but only with a "Flashcart", my son has loads of MP3's on his DS.
It is louder than a PSP, so he uses his DS primarily as an MP3 player.

The PSP plays MP3's without any 3rd party hardware.

Great stuff, thanks, ordering Memory stick now and going to pick u a psp after work!

Im going on holiday on the 11th October, do you think that is enough time to get the PSP, sort the firmware and get some games / films uploaded on to it?

The longest part is downloading the games on to your computer. It takes me hours.
You can do it in advance, and then copy them over to your memory stick later.

installing custom firmware from a prepared memory stick and battery takes about 1-2mins :)
Uploading anything on to the card will take from 10mins to 2 hours depending if you get a genuine card or a fake.
So you should have plenty of time.

I picked up a slim and light PSP last night, pretty neat, got it connected to the PS3 too!

I am waiting on delivery of the 8GB memory stick from mymemory now.

Also installed utorrent, not too sure about the setup yet, but will work on it,

Can anyone please help me with a loan of the Firmware needed ? Im off on holiday on the 11th of October and would really love to have it all set up to take with me.

Anyone able to help me?
