You can yeah, but it wont be in Hi-Def as the normal TV cannot out put the higher quality video

Its possible, but they wont be HD. So its a bit pointless.

The reason is ask is im possibly going to be getting a ps3 if i can get a good bundle and if i do im going to start buying blu rays instead of dvds - but just as long as they work on my normal set as when i get an hdtv i will have a decent selection of high def dvds

Just figure im not going to get a hd-tv for a bit but be nice to have a few incase i do ---- still not sure who will win the format war but i think they will coincide

Still unsure though as matrix trilogy isnt on blu ray and lotr trilogy possibly is hd-dvd exclusive so dont want to buy into it yet

Plus with blu ray region locked that puts my importing ideas out the window

I could just get the blu ray exclusives and the rest on hd-dvd

Many blu-ray titles are not region locked, check here for a list:

Personally I think it's daft starting to invest in a high definition format if you don't have a high definition TV to watch them on, the prices are still high and as the formats get more popular the prices are going to come down. If you wait until you have an HDTV it's likely you will be able to buy the titles you want for cheaper and at the very least they will be no more expensive.

You definitely can play Blurays on regular TVs, they will not play in HD but they will still play.

Anyone noticed blue-ray prices falling through the floor compared to when they came out? maybe it's the format war,and Sony are pannicking as HDDVD is and always has been cheaper.

Yer ive been finding that too blu ray seem to start at about £12.99-£15 (if you shop around) when they are released now
The thing is hd-dvd is outselling blu ray in europe and other places like oz but in usa blu ray is selling best - so they are trying to lower the price asap to attract ppl to buy into it - but the fact remains unless you have a ps3 you wont have blu ray unless your rich - whereas you can get a hd-dvd xbox 360 box for £100 with 5 free hd-dvds and hook it up to ur pc then into your tv if you have the right connection

But hd-dvd is looking the same price atm with most titles at around £13 but besides the new bourne film and transformers there havent been any major releases whereas sony have had all the pirates films re-released- simpsons and they seem to be advertising A LOT

I don't think HD-DVD is outselling Bluray in Europe or the US. I can't remember where, but I read a report a few weeks ago that Bluray is outselling HD-DVD 3 to 1 in Europe and 2 to 1 in the US. But both formats have good exclusives, I wanted Heroes in HD but I just had to get it in regular DVD because it wasn't out on Bluray :-(
