Can you use your xbox 360 HD to play DIVX movies?

As title, I was wondering this, i've not actually connected my 360 to my PC yet, I take it is just a USB lead u need between the two.

Is there anything fancy you can do when you connect the 360 to the PC?

If you use a UPnP media server, such as Twonky or TVersity, to stream to the 360 then it will play Divx and plenty of other formats too.
#3
you will need to connect with an ethernet cable (not a USB) or wirelessly through an adapter. TVersity works fine but you need a reasonable connection speed from you ISP

I think your a bit confused there. You dont even need a internet connection. Just a wired or decent wireless conection to where your movies/music are stored, i.e. your PC. This can be directly to the PC or through a router.
If the router has UPNP there is no confguration required in terms of ports.

The 360 is also a great media center extender, so if you've got a media center PC then that's the way to go if you want a simple set up. However it won't play DivX files through media center.

As MoneySavingG pointed out, all you need is a home network, wired or wireless. There's no need for the internet at all to share media between your PC and 360.

Thanks for this. I was having problems with mine sticking and automatically blamed the ISP (force of habit). You are correct of course, what I said didn't make sense.

I got my 360 connected to my PC/Router through a Ethernet cable. Can someone tell me exactly what i have to do now to play Divx files?
#10
Unless you are running media centre, you need to download TVersity (which is free), set it up and then configure your 360 to connect to Tversity server instead of your computer.
Is not too difficult.

Heres a nice guide:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/stream_video_xbox_360_tversity.cfm

Make sure you disable any previous sharing on the 360/disable sharing with Windows Media Center first, if youve set it up in the past
You might need to foward a port to your PCs internal IP address if your router is old.

Tversity is pretty great :)

Annoying that you can't rewind or fastforward, as i've had a couple of files just stop playing, and it's annoying having to watch them all the way through from the beginning. Still, that's for MS to sort out, not TVersity really.

I don't have an xbox 360 but use Tversity to stream to a Wii and it has rewind and fastforward available so I'm surprised to hear that the xbox 360 has not. On the Wii you just have to move your 'pointer' to the bottom of the screen and the fast forward, play, stop etc controls will appear for you to select as required. Playback is flawless and this is with a 54G LAN.

TVersity is more than pretty great. Remember that it is still a beta product at the moment and available for free, so grab it while you can. It also can do a pretty good job at transcoding and streaming music.

Guys can i have some help. I tried the TVersity and its not working for me. I followed the Afterdawn site and its not working. I installed TVersity collaborated it and everything. Put a file on there to test it. And went to my xbox and the video bit and it says i have to install windows media center. But the guide says that i dont have to. Any help please?
#19
you don't need to install media centre, tversity works without it.
You need to disconnect from your PC and then reconnect to the tversity server.

Not sure what you are stuck on, but let me know.

BTW You a fan of Shaun Michaels ?
#20
Lol been a fan of his since i was little lol.

Ill try to connect to the TVersity server, but the instructions only have identified it for wireless connection, whereas mine is connected via a ethernet cable

Not sure, but should work thru ethernet.
I had to download a thing called ffdshow I think. I believe it is a codec. Details are earlier on this thread.

BTW My son is a massive wrestling fan, that's how I know about the sexy boy !!
#22
Lol i used to watch wrestling religiously as a kid, i think all kids do lol. Nickname just kinda stuck i guess
#23
This is really annoying me now lol. The description only shows through wireless and i have a wired connection. Cant seem to find a guide to help me out. Any ideas please
#24
Disconnect your PC from the 360, then go to show videos, it will ask what item you wish to connect to, choose TVersity Server. Can't see why wired would make a difference.

Not at the 360 right now, so this is vague, sorry.

When you say disconnect from PC you mean pull out the ethernet cable from the 360?
#26
When i go to videos it says i need to install media sharing software on a Windows PC. And gives me a link www.xbox.com/pcsetup

Do i have to install that?

You need to download this onto your PC to share mp3s anyway. Unless you are running XP media centre. Seems like this is your problem.

Okay so i need to install that? Ill try it once ive installed it and get back to you
#29
Okay i done that and it connected to my Administrator account on my PC, which is the user im always on so im guessing it worked. But now i dont know how to unconnect it from my PC lol. I tried searching and couldnt come up with TVersity on the connections bit also despite it running on my PC. I know im not doing the bit on the guide correctly cause its wireless.

Ahh this is turning out to be a mission lol
#30
goto the settings tab, the last scroll screen on the right and there is an option in there. Disconnect and then goto 3rd or 4th screen and choose video. Then choose TVersity Server.
Sorry, vague again, but CBA switching xbox on ATM
#31
TVersity server doesnt come up im afraid :(. I did manage to disconnect it and its only reading my computer. Even after i restart the sharing thing.
#32
maybe a firewall blocking it ?
#33
Got it connected finally lol. I have some files on the bit where it says add files etc on the sharing bit. But when i connect via XBOX it says that no videos can be found and that watch through console etc etc. Why isnt it reading the files i added?
#34
They are .avi files so they should work right?

Have you installed the ffdshow ?
I had a problem with some Avi's until I installed it.
Also you need to right click the tray icon and begin sharing.
#36
Okay installed FFDshow. Seemed well complicated lol but i installed it and i think its running well i hope it is lol. Yet still the Xbox is failing to read anything. Sorry for bothering you Mrtootough added some rep for all the help you've been giving me

A good way to check if FFDShow is working is by playing a DivX in Windows Media Player 11, and if the FFDShow icons appear next to your clock in the bottom right, then it is fine.

Also...i had a problem like you.

1.What you need to do is install TVersity version 0.9.10.3 from here >>

http://www.tversity.com/home

2.Then, use this patch from here >>

http://download.tversity.com/Xbox360Spring2007PatchV3.zip

3.Once you have the patch, take the "Media Server" File and put it into

C:\Programs\Tversity\Media Server

that is if TVersity was installed there.

ALSO...what is vital, is that you have Windows Media Player 11 as well. If you do, then go to "Tools", then go to the "Library" tab, and click the button "Configure Sharing", if you are connected correctly your xbox 360 will be visible. Select the xbox 360 icon and click "Deny". You must have it at "Deny" for TVersity to work.

If you have not done this, then you wont be able to view videos from TVersity on your xbox because of the spring update.

B.) If you have done the above, then you can try to switch everything off, router, computer, xbox etc and switch it back on.

Then try it that way, or check that your router settings, under "Firewall" are allowing TVersity.

You can do this by,

going to your router page through internet explorer, for example for Belkin routers, you type "192.168.2.1" in the address box and go to firewall/Virtual servers, and input the information.

C.) Check to see if you are not restricting access to your access, for example by not allowing the Mac Address.

I hope i helped. Just set mine up yesterday so anymore questions dont hesistate to ask. :)

Got it to read the files and its working. Thank you for your help. Theres a problem when playing the files though. They seem to freeze at random times. It took a while to load up the file but i knew that it would cause the guide says it does. Should i wait while it freezez to see if it will start again or is there a program or something ican use?

you could try to reduce the bitrate through TVersity, in the settings, go to Transcode, and change some settings there. If your streaming from a network i.e. from a different computer, then yeah it happens. I have the same problem need to figure it out as well lol.. :)
