It has a chip that thinks it is still empty.

Not sure but I'm guessing there's a little electronic chip on the cartridge that you've refiled?
If so, that's why - the chip is telling your printer the cartridge is still empty.

I believe you can get a "chip re-setter" but I don't know if there's one available for the MP480.

I also have a canon and put 2 asda compatible cartridges in and it also says they are empty but it is printing ok so I just keep going.
I got the cartridges as Asda had advertised them at 2 4 £8 but labelled the wrong ones and they should have been around £45 for both but they let me have them for £8 so I bought 10!!!
