dont really want to do either but got to, have to do 3000 ish words by 4pm thurs :( and theyv got2 be relatedto graphic design
choices are

1. In traditional accounts gender attributes are fixed to biology which are natural and unchanging. Challenging this view, critical gender theory and contemporary findings in social and historical sciences suggest that gender is relative to particular cultures and times. Explore and explain these views in more detail and make use of visual examples to develop your points.

or

.2. Using examples from visual representation, which can include passages from films, advertisements, art, photojournalism and scientific illustration etc. show how images are used to reinforce and/or challenge the idea that gender is fixed. Make reference to reading to support and explain your arguments.

what do u rekkon

not very much really but these are the options for a graphic design related essay, well its given out to students doing graphics, illustration, photography or fine art. we have to make it graphics related, so it needs to be related to film, advertising etc

If you choose Q1, you could outline the highly contentious traditional views, demonstrate that gender roles vary across time and culture (citing historical examples such as ancient amazonian women, industrial work during WWII by women etc and more contemporary examples such as the 'caring and well groomed man' of the 90s). I'd want to say that the only tangible relationship between sex and gender is that one's sex can be an indicator of one's gender and vice versa, but not absolutely in either case.

right, thanku, thats actually quite helpful, and the caring well groomed man of the 90's could be easily related to advertising, now, just need to stretch that over 3000 words in about 2.5 days.
talkabout lastminute.com :)

I'm not actually sure if I am on the right tracks here as it is more to do with gender stereotyping. I remember doing an essay question which was something like "Explore the debate on whether gender is fixed or shaped by the media and society".

Probably irrelevant but if that helps I have quite a few things I could give you that might be useful

I'm not sure if it's going too far beyond your remit, but after WWII, women were encouraged to quit work and resume their roles as maternal and homely beings because research (was it by Bolby? I can't remember) at the time suggested that children suffer when they are deprived of substantial contact with mothers (or something to that effect). And so, when the troops came home there were plenty jobs for the boys!

It seems to me that gender roles vary because of societal need; economic as in the Metrosexual Man, and sometimes environmental, religious or political/ ideological. Plato offers women an improved role in his Republic and in Socialism, there's ambition for an egalitarian society.

interesting, and helpful to adegree thankyou, im just struggling with how i could relate that bit to graphic design. if it was about art in general itwould be so much easier, its the relating it to graphics bit thats making it so limiting
i can use the idea of the metrosexual man thow, thats a very common advertising theme
