thanks.

how easy is it to install? Is it one of the 'pre soldered' chips?

Is it just a case of unscrew console, place chip on. and ready to go?

The clip on chips can cause overheat problems apparently

I think the Wasabi is easy to install as you do not have to solder. i have not done this so youre best to check on forums to see which one is the best

See the link for wasabi above as according to that you just connect the chip to your drive on one side and connect the board to the chip with the supplied cable on the other side using the connectors, plug it on the drive chip, and start playing!

Why do you want to chip?
Why not just Softmod?

apparently once you remove the memory card from the Wii, it's not modded until you put it back in.

I'd rather just have it permenently modded and not have to worry

its permenantly modded with a soft mod....

once its softmodded you dont need a sd card

ok guys here is what it comes down to;

which one is my best option?

According to Wiidrive.com , when i entered my full serial, it said theres a 50% chance the chipset is GC2-D2E and covered in black glue.

And there is also a 50% chance the chipset is GC2-D2E.

so if someone can point me to the exact chip that'll work, i'll be very grateful! I'm a noob at Wii modding. PSP modding is more me.

cheers

hmm, i don't feel too comfortable removing the glue to be honest. I'm worried i'd break something

why not just open your wii and have a look?

Soft modding requires use of an SD card, but once its done you DONT need the SD card in there.
Once its done its done. no opening the wii no soldering no messing around with the hardware.

It doesn't cost anything (if you have a copy of the twilight princess and an SD card)
Its Easy to do. and takes about an hour.

You CAN update it. i'm running my softmodded wii perfectly happy on wii firmware 4.0e
and as a result i can quite happily play backup games and games from a usb hard driv.
Not a mod chip in sight!

bit the bullet and bought the Wiikey 2. hope it works :-)

Try and softmod a v4 from scratch though.

I don't think any Wiis ship with V4 yet.
If you have Firmware version 4 then yea go with a modchip.

if your firmware is lower than 4.0 (which more than likely it is)
you have completely wasted your money. you have also made the task of modding to gain the same functionality 10x more difficult.

You haven;'t wasted your money, you've saved alot of time and hassle in the future when nintendo block the softmod again.

You don't have to update the console to play games. and when they come out with a new firmwar it will be worked around within a week or so. as i said im running 4.0 fine softmodded.

What games do you need to have 4.0 to be able to play?

dcx_badass
None at the moment, but its still just extra un-needed effort.

You mean alot like buying a modchip, buying a triwing screwdriver, opening the case, using the tools to solder a modchip which may not even be compatible with the version of your Wii.

kinda something like that?
