Capello set to wield axe

According to the Daily Mail, England's under-fire boss has signalled the 'end of an era' for the national side's current crop of over-paid, underperforming stars.

David James, Emile Heskey and Ledley King have, we're told, played their last games for England, while the likes of John Terry, Robert Green, Matthew Upson, and Shaun Wright-Phillips are all facing the chop.

The News of the World goes one step further, saying that Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley Cole, and Steven Gerrard are on a 'final warning', with Capello set to name an 'experimental' squad for England's friendly against Hungary next month.

Capello himself is the focus of The Express this morning, who claim that the Italian was 'ready to go' if he hadn't had the full backing of the FA. They go on to declare that Capello would have waived his £12million contractual pay-off if necessary, but that he now has a 'damaged reputation' to repair.

And speaking of Capello's dented reputation, the News of the World screams 'PARANOIA', 'FEAR', 'SUPERSTITION' before bringing out a gaggle of unnamed players and sources to condemn Capello's World Cup regime. "Everything Fabio did before the World Cup was perfect. Everything he did during it was mad," said an anonymous 'senior player', with the Italian's now infamous late team selections offered as an example of his increasing suspicion.

The Mirror, meanwhile, have wheeled out their own 'established England star', to slam the Three Lions' training regime in South Africa: Prior to the Germany game it didnt help that we went through the most physically draining training session," he said. "No wonder some players look exhausted."

This obvious fatigue is Capello's biggest regret, according to the News of the World, with the famously strict coach 'convinced he should have cancelled the two-week training camp in Austria and let his players have a holiday after a long, hard Premier League campaign.' A 'close friend of Capello' said: "He had never seen his players so tired and jaded - of course, by then it was too late to do anything about it."

The Sunday Mirror has its own ideas about why England were so lacklustre on the pitch, however, and Ashley Cole is very much in the red-top's crosshairs. The Chelsea left-back reportedly 'sent sex texts to a young model he spotted on the internet just hours before 'England kicked off in crucial World Cup games.'

With anonymous sources slamming England's current set-up left, right, and centre, Sir Trevor Brooking makes an appearance in the Observer to deliver an ominous warning about the future, and the lack of potential, home-grown talent: "I don't think there are the obvious quality [players] coming through who can replicate what we have, unless we can fast-track one or two of the younger ones and that's asking a lot."

Thats what I was thinking:?
Be nice to start all over again with a clean slate though, John Terry had an awful World Cup, he certainly wont be missed.
No mention of Rooney?

So you would tell Wayne Rooney that he is to be axed from the England team and never play for them again?

That's the scary part of my post, there isn't (and will not be for a long time) another 17 players fit to wear the England shirt IMO.

We need team players not the 11 best players in the premiership.

The new players being banded around haven't even got a season of premiership football between them.

Tbh I wouldn't have Rooney in there either if we had anything resembling a replacement, at this rate Owen will be coming back as our number 1 striker.

rooney has a poor world cup so that's him finished with england? dont be stupid.

this farce wont get any better until capello mans up and falls on his sword

Cant pick a squad for the next 4 years based on this debacle. Take David James as an example. As a Liverpool fan i know all about "Calamity" but without him that defeat to Germany would have created an unwanted and unbeatable record.

Heskey. The entire planet knows he cant score. A good team player yes but in a knockout competition when you need goals what the hell was he doing in the squad? What was he doing on the field against Germany?

Ledley King. A decent enough player but you cant rely on a player who cant play two games in a row.

Capello made a mess of his squad selection but for me the biggest mistake he made was taking Ashley Cole. He has never been a team player and could care less about wearing the England shirt. As the old saying goes "It only takes one bad apple....."

Lastly why the hell does every England manager insist that Gerrard and Lampard can play together. It dont feckin work. Never has never will.

All in all Capello got it wrong, that said i would still give him the next two years as manager.

Considering 3 of the 7 ARE defenders your comment seems a little strange, but I guess thats what you wanted it to look like?

SO in your back 4, you'd have Glen Johnson and Michael Dawson?

Who's the other centreback?

Ashley Cole was probably the best player out of a VERY bad bunch.

So many things went wrong that it would take too much time to list and debate them.

There are many players on their way out and at a push 3 or 4 would make the next European Championships but we dont have enough world class players coming through the ranks. Maybe that isnt what we need but it is still a worry..

As a non-England fan these are the players I think could if they play to their potential make a strong England team in the next X years

If any position could of changed how our standing in the World Cup was, it was his, yet he did nothing in every game except shoot balls that went 20 meters into the air.

****, Heskey did more than him and that's saying something.

I disagree. Entirely.

If you have a decent and tight defence the chances of you conceding a goal is slim. Therefore if you keep a clean sheet you are going to not lose the game. Then you need to rely on your midfielders and forwards to score. Not just one player; Rooney.

Everyone was bad, not just Rooney.

We needed a decent forward, and it wasn't him.

We could go through the whole of the England team and call out every position and use the same argument so it has no sustenance.

Rooney was part of a poor team performance that in qualifying were superb. Mistake were made. This is a player that would probably get in to every international team in the world.

Unfortunately, he was the only player that decided to complain when the fans (rightly IMHO) showed their contempt on the performance they'd spent £'000s to watch. Yes, I know he apologised afterwards, but I think we both know that wasn't Rooney, but his advisors words, who were probably thinking about lost advertising earnings rather than give a monkey about the fans.

Not a team player and can one kick the ball with one foot.

I have very mixed views on this. Whilst I appreciate it was definitely the wrong thing to do, I must say that (despite Rooney lacking this in the actual games) his desire for both club and country is fantastic and he was obviously very frustrated. In the heat of the mooment people made wrong decisions and it could not have been nice to be given that reception by your own fans.

Like Arjen Robben who is still a quality player.

Ashley Cole is a great player.

If he had put the effort in and heard his "team" getting stick, then I'd accept that. But in that game, he was shockingly bad. Dunno why he's gone missing in this WC and I agree for club he gives his all. Do you think he was unfit / ill? he didnt seem to put in much effort on the pitch at all - even more unforgiveable, given his awful first touch where I would have expected him to try to win the ball back.

Something was DEFINITELY wrong with him as you have picked up on the point of his touch being bad and this was noted by many people. Just didnt want to do anything.

I think they were all exhausted. The additional 2 weeks training camp and other friendly games didnt help. They were poor against Mexico and even worse against Japan.

Some big questions need to be answered.

I cringe now when I think about how poor Terry was against the Germans. I have never seen a centre back playing international football for a top 10 ranked team so slow as he was against Germany.

Worst England player of the tournament for me was a close run thing between Rooney and Barry. How many aimless long balls did Barry want to play!

See I dont buy into this "they were tired" crap. Capello is paid £6M pa. You would think he would understand if there times he needed to lay off and rest etc. thing is, I think its the reverse. They dont train enough. Their fitness levels are poor and tactically inept. (ie they are clueless!) Golf anyone?

I agree Terry was poor..... but he was better that Rooney IMHO.

I think its a dead cert that Terry is for the chop anyway for his "very silly mistake" talking to the media. And I wonder what will happen to Gerrard if the rumours are true. ('Cos I honestly think this sister thing, is worse than sorting out the ex of another player, who was fair game IMHO - apart from the fact his missus is being cheated.)

One of the things we really need is a dependable captain, one who doesn't go missing through injury, suspension or drops in form (or knobbing around).

When the going got tough in the Algeria and Germany games who was there getting their heads up and trying to instill some belief.........that's right nobody.

Intersting to see in today's paper that Hart has been promised the number 1 from the start of next season.

Can't wait for the Hungary friendly, I hope it's completely empty and the FA end up with a fat load of egg on their stupid faces with the scenes of a completely empty Wembley being beamed around the globe. Who in their right mind is going to pay to get into that match?

The very least they could do is offer anyone who went to SA a free ticket and complimentary food/drink, don't know whether they'd go anyway, probably not.
