been told the head gasket is gone on my 1998 vauxhall astra by RAC. been loosing coolant and exchaust is smoking lots. 75k on the clock. Does anyone who knows about cars have any recommendations or shall i just sell it as is? am hoping to take it to the garage to get a quote. Doubt its worth repairing.

I'd say you are looking at between £300-500. Most of it will be labour costs.

i had a mk3 97 astra, i sold mine fully working for 400, 3 years ago! so i doubt youll get 600 unless you know a lot of blind people!?

If you have had it for over a year might be worth looking into scrappage scheme, you get £2000 off a new car, go for something around £6000 shouldn't work out too expensive

Or put another engine in from a breakers yard...You can pick them up from £100 or buy a donor astra that someone else is scrapping cheap and transplant that engine plus you ll have loads of spares.

i actually had a 318ti up until some **** wrote it off back in March, the Astra was the sisters car which i used until i got something else as i didnt want to rush and she didnt need it any more.

it was a good run around and not too expensive on petrol. i dont want to get something that just drinks petrol living in london as all i ever seem to be doing is sitting in traffic.
