So starting to get warm... air con in the car smells.

Dont really want to pay over the top for it to be sorted by some garage... i know it only needs a clean - maybe a recharge? fyi its a 56 plate and defo hasnt had any servicing done on the aircon in the 2 years ive had it.

Anyone with any experience suggest any products / halfords doing it etc...?

+rep to anyone with anything of any use to say.

If it only needs regassing, shouldn't cost you more than £40 at a garage.

How old is your car and do you use the aircon much?

It's possible that the filter needs changing.

I think kwik fit and other garages do air con checks / re gassing etc but might be worth while going to a main dealer.
Might cost you a little extra mind but i wouldn't trust the others.

have a look in halfords / tesco for something like this:
http://www.carlite.dk/files/Bilpleje/Air-Conditioning-Cleaner.JPG
but you need an aircon service/recharge if it's not cold enough, but a recharge wont make it smell nicer
#4
Or you could replace the cabin filter, or try one of those air conditioning sanitisers.

Like the ones above. lol

Turn it on and leave it running with the windows open for a while, it may just clear itself.

AC should be run during the Winter as well as the Summer to keep the system lubricated.

Good luck.

If it still gets cold but just smells, then won't need regassing.
It is usually a blocked drain from the compressor.
The water accumulates and just stagnates and smells like a pond.
Try and find out where the drain is and try and unblock it with some bendy wire or similar.
You need to fix the cause, not try and cover the smell.

+1

Car is 2 years.

Is the filter also the pollen filter?

Halfords seem to do it... they quote £3.99 to clean it but it doesn't say if that includes the cleaner... i presume it doesn't?

Is it still under warranty? was it bought from a dealer?

Not sure whether the warranty covers this topic as such but it's worth a visit and maybe a small white lie along the lines of it doesnt always kick in etc etc ....

Dealer and yes under warranty til November.

Try leaving it with the ac on and the temp set to hot. Read it on another thread on here:thumbsup:

Kwikfit were doing the regas for £25

Then i would definately take it to the dealer and get them to check it over.

The smell is more likely caused by a blocked or dirty filter.

Good luck.

This seems the cheapest for what was suggested earlier...

The one I used was from tesco (called Kleen Air), I'm not sure whether they're all the same. Some places can do a de-bug at the same time as re-gassing, have a look around. kwik-fit were doing AC recharges for £25 over winter
#15
Think il try running it on hot for a bit see if that clears it, im sure its just where it hasnt been used at all over the winter.

Nationwide are doing a air con service/disenfectant.recharge for £69 not a bad price, and a free check

http://www.nationwideautocentres.co.uk/services_air_conditioning.aspx

If you do find a hole bunged up its worth disenfecting the system anyway as bacteria can grow and make you unwell, Lidl sell a cleaner for £1.99 ive used it on my car

I dont think it will get hot enough to kill bacteria tho.

Trust me it will, i know several people who have had the same problem and this has cured it. The best way to avoid it is to keep your aircon switched on all year.
#20
Yeah i know you keep your aircon but i thought you need to get to 100c or more to kill bacteria.

it won't kill bacteria, but it would dry out a damp filter that could be giving off the odours.
#22
yeah but you still need to kill off bacteria every few years

I service A/C systems, this is what you need to do. Go on Ebay and buy a tin of "forte air con treatment", approx £10. Find and remove your cabin/pollen filter. Follow instructions on can. Replace cabin/pollen filter with new one - approx £7 - £20 from eurocarparts - google your nearest branch.

If your A/C is warm, then i would guess on an 06 car - it would probably have a hole in the condenser. The likes of kwik-fit would just regass and charge you regardless. So, be careful where you take it.

hope this helps

Its not warm, its cold, but smells.

yes i agree, more then likely a blocked drain, do you see water dripping from under the car anywhere whilst the aircon is running, if not its more then likely a blocked drain, a recharge wont make it smell any nicer.

This one works a treat. Available from Euro Car Parts.
