My car has just all brake disks replaced after a grinding sound started. This cost me £300 - A mate seems to think I was robbed, and he got his done for under half that.

Bit annoying as it had a full service in July and they repaced the brake pads.

He quoted £400 at first, so I sent my father in law down there as he knows them, they dropped £100 off the price straight away.

So is £300 a fair price for the job? (Car is a 03 Scenic)

It depends if its a renault dealer or franchised but nevertheless i do think £300,00 is a bit pricey, i know a lot about cars and I would have said about between £190 - £240 all in

Just done my Picasso (so would have thought similar)

Done it myself, Piece of cake 45 minutes about £70 all in including discs and pads.

You was robbed if it didn't include pads.

What are you driving...the space shuttle.

Seriously, ask around your work find someone who uses an honest mechanic who does 'homers', even paying a good hourly rate but cutting all the tax **** (paying Vat on top of Vat for parts and labour). Should see your bills drop 50 - 40%. Have had 2 mechanics over the last 10 years, when I first relocated 5 years ago, I paid garage rates for just under a year before I found a good retired mechanic. That was an expensive year!

Oh yes, Break out that Haynes manual!!!

It'll be the rears that cost the money no doubt. Just tried to get a price from my usual supplier and they don't even stock them.
#14
was it just the replacement of the pad or the discs too if it was a grinding noise did they say if the disks were warped, i think 300 is a bit much being a mechanic myself, like greg saig its 45 minute job maybe an house if you chagning the disks too

there are some prices of discs here

I wish, they don't tend to do them nowadays do they.

Take the wheels off, and the brake calipers. Theres usually two little screws holding your discs to the hub.

Biggest problem was the torx screw holding the caliper on 55m torx, took me longer to get to halfords and back to get one than to do the discs.

think it was discs and pads - but the missus has been down there as I am at work.

Too late to do anything now I suppose apart from kidnapping his children until the price is dropped??

Think I'll look elsewhere in future

What engine size? Based on 2l rough figure for the parts front and rear £170 + fitting +vat.
#19
Apologies from me, misread the OP, didn't realise it was all 4.

Mine was for just the front.

1.6, so with fitting and VAT, £300 isnt that bad?

so you have disk brakes on all 4 wheels which were all replaced along with new pads?

if the pads were done in July then they would not need replacing for about 30,000 miles+

Parts for that about £150 so a bit overpriced imho. All depends where he had to get the parts really. I find it odd that the whole lot needed replacing though as it's very unlikely they would have all suddenly worn out. Then again, without seeing the old bits first hand, who can say.

One other thing worth mentioning re the rears...

http://i18.ebayimg.com/04/i/000/f9/c7/8bc1_1.JPG

If you examine that picture you'll notice the bearings are fitted into the disk (unlike the front). Now they may have been an 'extra' as they don't tend to be supplied with drums so that probably added to the labour/parts cost. Not into Renaults so don't know.

If the disks were knackered they would have probably ruined the pads. So by reusing the pads you run the risk of trashing a new set of disks....

that's what I was thinking

I think it isnt too bad a price for all four discs and pads but i definitley think you were ripped off with the service and pads,Even heavy driving you would get 20000 miles and if the discs were worn then they should have told you, sounds to me that they either never changed the pads or they used very cheap copies,

I have gone from being robbed, to getting a good deal in the space of 2 pages! Only on HotUKDeals!!

Agree about the service, surely in July the disks would have been showing signs of wear and they should have replaced them then.

What did you actually have done in July? Just the front pads or the lot? Just asking as rear pads/disks hardly ever need changing.

Just front pads.

I was thinking it was just the back, as that was where the grinding sound was coming from

Think you have gone from been robbed to getting a good deal to being robbed again in 2 pages, aren't they drums on the rear of a scenic?

If so I don't see how these were worn and needing replacement.

What model have you got?

If I were you I would get an exact breakdown of both sets of work you had done.

Somewhere along the line they have seen you coming with a telescope IMO.
