Yesterday my car's ESP warning light came on along with the engine management light [2004 VW Polo]. The car was driving fine. Once I turned it off and on again, the ESP light went off but the engine management one is still on.

Any idea what caused this? The car seems to be driving normally, is it safe to carry on driving it? Just wondering because I have a long journey to make on Friday and don't have time to get to a garage before then...

Thanks!

This light comes on mine time and time again. My garage do not consider it a problem...

I've no real experience of this. My ESP light comes on if the road is very didgy (surface, not neighbourhood) or if one or more tyres are under-inflated. As long as it's not flashing it safe to drive. It's logging a fault and your servicer should be able to tell you about it. My engine warning light only used to come on when I was running on fumes and hardly ever shifted the car. After I gave it a good drink and ran it around a bit more it would go out. Obviously there are other reasons it might come on, but if you've no other concerns...

it could be an o2 sensor problem or a stability problem , i would get it seen to at garage as if you not know what its about ,ask the experts , and for a garage to say an engine management light or an esp light isnt a problem, they aint a garage in my eyes

I was told it was not a concern once or twice too. As long as it's not flashing. And if it doesn't come on again straight away when you restart the engine, it's just logging a fault (minor) and carrying on with it's chores.

I read somewhere that the ESP light comes on if both brake light bulbs are blown... which I checked. Thanks for the suggestions will check tyre pressure etc. Any thing else to look out for?

I'm reassured that it was only on for a few minutes and then went off and hasn't come back, but really have no time at all between now and friday to get to a garage

OP, you need a diagnostic report -should cost around £50, that will tell you the exact fault

that sounds right, was only on for a few minutes. I parked in Tesco and when I came back out 10 minutes later, it didn't come back on. Its just the engine management light that'll bug me until I get it looked at

I had mine 'diagnosed' once. He charged me a tenner and reset it. It didn't come back on again for a year, when I went on maternity leave and stopped driving the car. When I did go out it was running on dregs, someone told me it's like letting sediment settle to the bottom then running it through the engine. I filled it up, run around for a bit, 'shook it up' and it went out again!

I'm sure there are other reasons for it coming on though!

check your tyre pressures, this is often the problem

I'd be more worried about the Engine Management light, would avoid driving long distance before it has been looked at by a garage.

If its ESP warning shouldnt you already know it was going to come on?

There is a diagnostic tool on ebay that cost me £25 (I brought one after I paid £30 to get it cleared by auto electrician) I've used it 4 times since then (3 years) as I seem to get a misfire when I drive circa 300 miles in one go.

Give me a moment and I'll post a link to a similar product.

doesn't this just come on if any problem occurs? and then only a garage can reset it? I was under the impression that it's just a warning to get the car looked at....

I was going to say something similar - if possible find out if anybody close to you has VAG-COM it's the mutts, equivalent to a garage diagnostic but most people will do it for the price of a pint

If you look in your car manual it will most likely even tell you that you should immediately stop your car and not use it any more. It could indeed be nothing i.e. just an electronic gremlin but it could also mean that something in your engine is not working as it should, so I would not take the risk.

Remember the first timer mine can on, I was 250 miles into a holiday to Cornwall and it blinked on.:x Papped myself as I didn't have breakdown assistance at the time. Braved it and carried on as the car was driving fine. When I got to on holiday, I was chatting to a guy in the bar and he advised me that these can be caused by a build up on kack in the catalytic convertor and sugested I give it a bit of welly. Either by fluke or him being right it worked. Happened again on the way home so once I was home I left it for a day or so but it stayed on so I forked out to have it diagnosed only to be told it was a one off mis-fire on cylinder 4. As it took 60 seconds to clear I felt peeved that I had to pay to get it cleared so brought one of these tools from ebay.

Have to say it's the best money I've ever spent as I would normally have forked out for a grease monkey to stand there telling me it's gonna be a big job
