water on the solenoid?

You should have washed and waxed the body work not the engine :)

Have a look at the distributor. Maybe while rinsing the car some water got under the bonnet. Pull the five leads off and give them a dry (do it one at a time or else you might get the leads mixed up).

No i didn't wash the engine but i wiped the inside of the bonnet as it was covered in mud

I have no idea what the distributor or solenoid look like, will have a look in the manual and see if it says in there

When i turn the key it sounds like it wants to start but then doesn't if that is any help

and yes i am a woman :p

Is the area around the battery wet? Look at the battery terminals. This happened to me after the heavy rain a few weeks ago. After drying the terminals the car started.

I had a look in the engine in case i'd knocked anything and it looked dry but i'll go out and have a closer look at everything in a little while, thanks

That's far too technical for some women! :) My wife, after 15 years driving, has never filled the petrol tank - she says she's too scared to do it in case she gets it wrong!:w00t:

spray wd40 on the spark plugs(remove and reinsert the ht lead from the spark plugs 1 at a time tho other wise you might forget which 1 go's on each plug)

Oh, you're a good 'un then, aren't you. Take a picture of the engine bay, and we'll all try and diagnose the problem.

We may even be able to start a quiz to name the make and model of your car

erm yeah :whistling:

If it wont start I have a great idea...
1. Ring the RAC
2. Ring the AA
3. Get a Vauxhall garage to pick it up and fix it

or phone a friend...
asking audience is no use

My car is now working :-D

I ran a tea towel over every part of the enigine i could get to as most of it is covered up and it all seemed dry but still did not start.
While i was out there my OH's friend from a couple of doors down popped some music over for him and he took a look and couldn't see anything obvious either but said to try pressing down on the accelerator whilst turning the key and it started but stopped when i took my foot off the pedal, tried again this time keeping my foot on for a few minutes and its running fine now
He reckons where a moved my car back slightly away from the house before i washed it the engine flooded and that's why it wouldn't start, shall remember that!

Thanks to everyone who gave helpful advice, will leave some rep in a minute

Sorry if this has already been asked but I haven't read the whole thread. Did you move your car at all to wash another one or something? I only ask as we have 2 cars and a while ago my husband moved mine off the drive so he had more room to wash his, then he moved it back onto the drive to wash mine, both times starting the engine to move it.

When I then came to start the car the next morning the battery was flat and it was because it had been started twice and moved only a few feet, this drained the battery. When you start a car it uses most of the power in the battery and then needs a drive to charge it back up again, as we did this twice without taking it for a drive in between, it flattened the battery.

Once the battery was recharged it started with no problem and now when washed it is either not moved off the drive at all, or we push it manually. Perhaps this is what could have happened to yours?!?

no probs khalifazed

Annie, may have been something similar except my battery was fine.
I park my car right up against the house to stop my childrens friends from riding their bikes around my car and scratching it anymore :x
So i had to drive it back slightly so i had enough room to wash, i couldn't be bothered to move it back though so left it where it was until i got in it this morning to do the school run.

But at least it is sorted and i now know what to do if it happens again :)

Glad to hear its OK now, perhaps because you only started it the once to move it it didn't do the battery in as much as mine did from moving it twice. But hey, we learn from our mistakes don't we, and we learn new things all the time.
