Car hire in Spain

Good morning. Has anyone noticed how the price of car hare abroad has shot up?

In July 2009, I paid £261 (fully covered) for a Ford Focus for two weeks from Alicante Airport. The same car for the same two weeks in 2010 will cost me more than double this price!

I understand there are a shortage of cars to hire.

Can anyone point me to a better deal? My dates are 16-30 July 2010.

I believe the reason is a shortage of cars-remember seeing a report on telly about this-was something to do with the credit crunch and car hire companies underestimating demand,so they raise the prices of the cars that they do have.

if you have a place over in Spain the best idea is to take your own over and leave it dont think the car hire prices will get any cheaper just yet

easycar.com ?
what about buying a car out there? (sounds extreme - but a £250 runabout might just do you!)
public transport and taxis when you need them - could well be cheaper than £400 - just need some research into times and taxi numbers.
look up an ex-pats website and see if there are any car-sharing schemes available in the area you're visiting.

You will not buy a " £250 runabout " in Spain, car prices are far higher than the UK, also buying a car there is far more complicated than buying a car in the UK.

have you read the T&C's at easycar?

You have to pay the first £5000 of any damage at most suppliers even with collision damage waiver!

You have to take out extra ZERO RISK insurance too which covers the first £5000. Most people dont as they think CDW covers them :w00t: About an extra £40 per week.

Look at Hertz.com and prepay online. I searched your dates and came up with £400 for a Focus or Astra and you would get 10% back on quidco. Not as cheap as last year, but better than double.

Hertz were the cheapest I could find for Spain this summer.
