Ive just renewed my car insurance, spent ages shopping around to make sure I got the cheapest possible quote. Then added my wife as a named driver & got it even cheaper even though she has no driving history & only a provisional licence!

I spoke to an agent and apparently this is nearly always the case. They take the view that only one of you will be driving the car & people in a committed relationship tend to be more responsible and cautious on the roads.

So whether or not your other half will actually ever get behind the wheel, add them to your policy and save pounds.

Some of you may already know this, but it was news to me, I wish Id known last year.

Here's another anomaly; I was shopping for insurance for my teenage son recently and I found a fully comp policy on business cover (driving to different locations each day) was cheaper than 3rd Party, fire and theft! Whilst yr wife only has a prov licence she wont push the premium up, it will go up when she passes her test.

i did this with hubbys insurance i wasnt going to go on it as i dont drive his car but it was cheaper if i went on so i did
i dont know what prov licence has to do with it because i have been driving over 10 years and was still cheaper to add me

Yes, like the insurance agent said "people in a relationship". It didn't matter if we weren't actually married either, "common-law" was fine.

Does anybody know if there's any good companies that wont charge the earth if i want to add my son on my policy when he passes his test?
Does it go up silly money to add a 17 yr old on your policy?

Should be fine, provided you are already living together as man & wife at the same address.
