I am looking into car insurance, and its stupidly dear.

I am looking to insure myself and father as a named driver to help lower my premium.

If i am the proposer of the insurance, and a frequent driver, which uses the car for commuting, and my father is the main driver and doesnt use the car for commuting,

Will i still get the no claims bonus as i am the proposer of the insurance.

Thanks.

I have insurance with Churchill - we own 2 cars - both policies are in my name - but they also offer the named driver NCD.
It's only usually the policy holder that accumulates the discount.
As we are married it doesn't matter which of us is the policy holder and which the named driver - I am the registered keeper of one car and he is the other registered keeper.
Not sure if this would work in your case - and don't think all companies offer this?
Might help!

I think you will. As long as you are the owner, adding experienced drivers as named drivers should lower the premium as the insurers hope that the more experienced drivers will drive some of the time reducing the risk of a prang! However as the owner and main driver you should collect the noclaims benefit if hopefully there are no claims.

Who will be driving the most? It is illegal to be a named driver if that driver does the most driving.

In your case i'd expect your insurance company will say you are the prime user as you use the car for commuting .........and your father doesn't......

You need to be the main insurance policy holder or it will be seen as 'fronting' which is illegal.

If you're just doing 30 miles a week then I would imagine it would be much cheaper for you to get a taxi everywhere.

Don't think the intention was that you should do this for the rest of your life, but while your mileage is only around 30 miles a week it may be cheaper, and it appears you are trying to save money by working out the least expensive way of doing things.

When you work out purchase price of a car, insurance, depreciation, servicing costs, MOT, replacement tyres, petrol etc etc etc it's worth considering.

As the driver who uses the car for commuting then you are the main user of the car - it wont matter if your father happens to do a few more miles than you, you will be in charge of the vehicle for the majority of the day ie parking up when you go to work and then driving home, so you must declare yourself as the main user and pay the appropriate premium - anything else is illegal (fronting) and your insurance will be invalid if you have to make a claim - you could end up bankrupt and or in prison - is it really worth it ??
