Car Inverter Advice Please

Looking to purchase a car cigarette lighter inverter, just for charging notebook, maybe phones, probably occasional hairdryer use etc.

Is this suitable?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-675258-Watt-Car-Inverter/dp/B000OO9V48

I'm really not sure of what Wattage/Voltage requirements I should be looking at and if 160 Watt is enough or I should be looking at something more...

All help appreciated!

Unlikely to be enough for a hair dryer. They will probably draw very high wattage that will blow the fuses/inverter.

Make sure it is suitable for laptops as some aren't and also make sure it far far exceeds the max wattage of you laptops PSU. You can find this on the PSU itself and if not you should find the voltage and max current. Watts = Voltage x Current so if it is 19V x 4A it would draw a max of 74W. You would want to get an inverter way above this though as some won't work as efficiently as they make out so don't get an 80W if ya laptop is 76W.

160W would be a good choice for most laptops but again make sure the inverter is suitable for laptops.

Basically do the same maths above on anything you intend to plug into it.

The one you have linked to looks suitable for laptops and so just check the wattage of devices and ya should be ok. Oh and one last thing... Make sure you don't flatten ya battery. These things are best ran whilst the car is running otherwise you can drain the battery and whilst ya laptop will be charged ya won't be going anywhere in ya car. :)

Yup agree with cydonia. Don't even think about using an inverter with the car off it will knacker your battery within literally 5 minutes.

Same as above good advice from cydonia

Great advice Cydonia, thank you very much.

Just looked at my notebook and seen it's 30W so that should do for that. Just awaiting hair straightener information before I decide which one to go for, probably the one I've linked to.

Don't use these for hairdryers. I have this one which is bulky but very solid. The weight of the Silverline one with the plug may cause it to pull out or damage your ciggy lighter socket.

I know that this is a poor post but I got dragged into both Lidl & Aldi today and noticed that one of them has a can shaped one for sale. Don't remember the wattage or the price but it might be worth a look if you are passing. Previous ones were about £15 and 150W if I remember right, usually they have a 3yr warranty.
Rapped my own knuckles already :)

Checked again today. Its Aldi, 150W, also has USB points costs a bit under £15 3 year warranty
