An ipod nano is a good option, or even a shuffle if you dont have loads of music

Do you have the manual for the xc90 to check which ipods are compatible and what functionality you have in regard to the display and stereo controls?

Ipods are easy to use, download itunes and once you've got to grips with that the rest is simple.

Depending on which model you can use with the car you can get ipods from around £40

Also, its worth looking if the cd player has the capability to play mp3 discs. You could get between 5-10 albums onto one disc without having to buy an ipod.

ok thanks, there are so many varieations including generations was wondering if a touch be a good option. need about 8gb really as i guess i could use it in 6mths time when car goes back. be better than my phone quality.
i need something really plug and play just to get all my stuff off pc and on to it as simple as poss as technology and me dont get on.
what would be the kind of price would need to pay for decent 2nd hand one?

gosh no i dont and not sure the company does have it either to hand, kept with service maintenance guys. i guess its whatever is normal as its joined with usb connection i know that. so maybe they compatible with most. i know all the controls are on the steering wheel for sound anyhow and apparently most people use it easily. but i am thicker than the normal most, lol.

If it's a usb slot then depending on what the volvo is capable of you might even get away with using a usb stick or any cheap mp3 player.

I'll have a look for you. What year and model is the car?

I've had a quick look and If it's a usb slot under the armrest then just get a usb stick. Something like this should be fine

Then it's just a case of getting the music onto your pc in .mp3 format and copying it across to the stick.

I use a 32 gb ipod touch with a belkin fm transmitter and the sou d quality is fantastic, plus it charges your ipod while you use it.

Not used a cd in the car or works van for years now

the socket thats on it is exactly the same as a usb stick end so cant attack stick to it, obviously, it is under the armrest indeed i am told. apparently needs some ipod or the like to attach to it, just wondering what i really need to use, not all the hype expensive jargon type thingy, have the usb sticks i use in the house but thats not gonna work hence my question.
its a brand new xc90 so 2010. hope that helps cos the online information just confusing the brains out of me and the nearest dealer is like 30 miles away.
thanks for all your help so far.

i know its designed for some ipods to attach up to it, but not sure if a generic one is the same or if a certain generation is required for the newer cars. are all ipods mp3 players fitted with the same connections unlike mobile phones.

An ipod lead plug and a memory stick are exactly the same at the usb end so there's no way one would fit and the other wouldn't. It's just a case of whether it will work or not.

Page 234 of the owners manual confirms a usb stick or any model of ipod 2005> except a shuffle work fine.

Enjoy the car!
