My brother has a clapped out van that keeps loosing it's charge, he charges his battery the night before he goes anywhere but I thought for Xmas I'd buy him a Jump Starter, I saw my local mechanic use one once that started my old Van in a second....

Problem is I can't find any? There's loads on ebay and amazon etc but are all the cheapo ones that apparently don't work....

I don't want a charger, I want a starter.....

Any mechanics out there know what I need to buy....Around the £50 mark

Thanks

I think that it is one of these that you need, I have one and it is superb starts the car instantly, it also has a cigarette lighter socket so that you can power other items. hope this helps :thumbsup:http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_183849_langId_-1_categoryId_165629

Why not just buy a new battery?

Scrap my last this is a phenominal deal for the same item, this is identical to mine and believe me I paid a lot more for mine.

His alternator is screwed so it's not charging the battery properly....This is his second van and he's had the same issue both times, he only uses it on sundays so it sits all week draining it's power....

He'd love something like this

They only have the same as everyone else, nothing stands out as being a proffessional unit...am ideally after something aimed at mechanics

The problem is the ones priced for the home user market arent really up to the job and the pro options are into treble figures and upwards machinemart have some heavy duty ones but the prices are not low. The only way I can think of getting pro kit at your budget is check local papers for a liquidation sale of a garage/workshop and you may get one from the auction albeit used.

Tell him to disconnect the battery if its sitting idle all week. Should only take a minute to disconnect/connect.

Well he isn't ever going to get much out of it if the alternator has gone - would be a much better investment to replace/repair the alternator and buy a new battery in my opinion. Batteries can sit all week and it not be an issue.

Seems a bit daft to do this IMO.

What happens if you forget to charge it or forget it altogether.

Alternator swap out and the problem disappears. Can't be that hard or expensive.

Agreed swapping the alternator on vans is usually even easier than it is on a car as there tends to be more space in the engine bay.

He's been quoted £320.... He's not got much cash and has had this issue with his previous van also so I thought I could get him something that could be used as a back up....at the moment he's been charging his battery every saturday night for about 4 months....

You gotta be joking, you should be able to pick up a recon for 60 quidish. Fit it yourself.

As Hartzler says van should be a piece of cake, what van is it.

Not going to do your electrical system much good what you are doing / going to do anyway

A couple of years ago the alternator in my Peugeot packed in, 3 bolts and i took it out. Took it to my local car parts centre and traded it in for a renovated one and put it back in the same day. Fixed in about 2 hours in total (including travelling time) and cost about £60 in total.

Changing out an alternator is generally a case of half a dozen bolts a couple of wires/terminals and thats it no specialist tools just socket set and screwdrivers, if you are worried about getting the wires mixed get a few shots on a digital camera an hour tops and you are sorted.

PS Be prepared to get filthy though, but thats part of the fun!
