Let me join you.

Yesterday I bought my very first car :)

It's a N Reg Renault Clio Versailles with a 1.2ltr engine and 60k miles on the clock. Managed to do a deal with the fella in the garage for £780 including a years MOT and 6 months tax.

What I'm even happier about is my insurance ... Its at £550 a year! And I'm only 18! Reason being, the policy has my mum down on the insurance and she's been driving around 20 something years now so that's whats lowering it for me.

Anyone on here own a clio? I've heard they're very good reliable cars!

Can't wait to pick up on Sunday :geek:

*slightly jealous* i LOVE clios, but there never seems to be any available for sale lately.

i only passed my test 4 months ago at the end of the month, and ive got a lowly 1.1 metro, my insurance is £330.
I bought my car for £425.

About 3 weeks ago i was dying for a new car, found myself what i thought was a nice 1.5 Diesel s reg saxo.
OH MY GOD - worst mistake of my life.
Bought it for £860. Thought id got a right bargain!
Wrong! It needed £160 worth of work doing to make it roadworthy, then i was told it was "knocking" and the engine was crap and had only a year left on it :(

The seller saw me coming :( Private sale :(
Sold it on for £600 :( Was lucky to get that TBH.

But yeah, god i remember getting the metro, i felt so cool!
Im so glad i didnt sell the metro, i went straight back to my baby! And weve been happy ever since, the crappy saxos made me appreciate the metro for what it is, and well be together now until its last working journey :)

Youll always love your first car :)

Driving is great, wish id passed sooner (im 22 in 2 1/2 weeks)

And maybe me seeing this thread wasnt a good idea.

I love cars, and could talk about them all day
#4
haha
lucky for you guys....
im driving a 1l micra... brilliant on petrol.. i can get 450 miles on 25 quid

i've had my licence for jus over 3 years.... (im 20) my insurance is £1300 as a 2nd driver, mainly because my old man has his NCB on his car, and i had a bit of a bump last year
#5
My car is also good on petrol :) thats what these little cars are all about :)

And even though mines a 1.1 its suprisingly nippy, youd be suprised how many people have thought oh its only a metro i can take that - for me to not let them overtake :)

Not a racer or anything, just dont like people looking down on my car :)

lol
same here mate lol these cars may be small but underneath they are tough lil sh*t's
lol

My son bought his first car on Saturday - Mitsubishi Carisma, T reg, 1.6GLi. He's only 17 & not passed his test yet (got it end of this month). Shopped around & got his insurance for £1200, through Quinn Direct, which I think is an absolute bargain for a not-so-small car & a 17 yr old on provisional licence.

Again, it's a bit cheaper because I'm a named driver on his policy (old 41 yr old, been driving 20 yrs).
#8
I got my insurance in april before id passed on my own (not on with my mum or anything, worked out more!) and i was suprised it was only £330 :)

Gotta take my car to the garage tomorrow, hope its nothing too bad!
#9
lol @ josh. Thats unlucky with the saxo. My mate has just written of a saxo he's only had for 4 months - drove it straight into a wall, the plonk.

I love the clios too. nice and compact and nippy too. Shame about the steering though, its a bit heavy cause its not PAS but hey - it'll build up my muscles lol!

I passed on the 9th Oct which was a week before my 18th. Had only had 20 lessons and no private tutoring, and I passed first time - was well chuffed!

@Whingealot... have you tried MoreThan for insurance? That's where I've gone. The trick we did to get the insurance cheap is to have the older person as the policy holder and the younger person as the named driver. Theres an option then to change whos the main driver of the car - and for us, I chose me as the main driver (cause the cars in my name) So from an original quote of around £1600 with MoreThan (TPF&T) Its now at £550 which is just over £1k saving!

Brilliant.

If i remember, On sunday I'll try and post some pics!

congrats on your first car!

Renaults don't have a very good reputation for reliability in the various surveys but don't let that put you off! :) Mind you I seem to remember that brakes can be a problem on Clios.

Has it got any service history? Has it had a cambelt change recently or not?
#11
Its well unlucky about the saxo, cant believe i lost £400 on it, wish id never bought the ******!

Well done on passing, i loved it when i passed, as soon as instructor dropped me off at home, i ran upstairs rang insurace to let them know then went straight out, sang my little heart out all the way i was so chuffeD!

I dont wanna sound like your mum or anything, but be careful, i was stupid when i passed and thought id clocked up 2 tickets in the first 48 hours of passing!
Luckyily i was being silly and got nothing, but just be careful, i remember how excited i ws to be allowed out on my own!

Now the novelty of driving has worn off for me *sobs* but i still love the freedom i have!
#12
Oh and it doesnt matter about power steering, my car doesnt have it, little car dont really need it TBH, the steerings light in them anyway :)

Only thing that annoys me about not having it is for doing manouvers while stood still, shouldnt turn the car without a little power though i was told by my instructor, but at times it is necassary, like when youve got a little space to get out of, cant keep it moving and steer!

My friend, If Ure mum is 'fronting; your insurance ie as the main driver it could lead to major problems in the unfortuanate event of an accident. Please, be very careful - be straight with the Insurance Co. Hope I have misinterpreted your post but the cover quote does seem very, very low.

Make sure he does his pass plus as it helps on insurance

Im pretty sure I'm alright with the insurance, otherwise it wouldnt have got processed.

I've just ordered the sat nav and cd/radio as posted on here!

Can't wait. lol

Apparently the clio does around 45mpg - which sounds quite good considering my old motorbike did around 60mpg!
#16
Thats thanks to me then :)
Im thinking of getting that CD player.

Youll love the freedom having a xar gives you, im excited for you :)

I've got to agree with Eggman. I'm 22 now but spent three years on my dad's insurance. Unfortunately I had two accidents one which was my fault and the other wasn't.

The last accident which was my fault Norwich Union said why are you driving the car again - stupidly I had put my car in my name (as I bought it) but the insurance in Dad's name. Norwich union took 4 months to pay out. We had to sit an interview with an accident assesor, and Norwich Union hardly kept us informed. Luckily they did pay out in the end otherwise it would have been £4.5k down the drain as my 306 was a write off. The whole time they were saying how they probably wouldn't pay out. I've now got my own insurance and 2 years no claims so my policy is only £500 for a 1.4.

It does get easier....
#18
Yeah, I can appreciate the difficulties it can provide with the insurance. It is my first car though, and it didn't cost a lot (to be fair) and already has serveral knocks on it. I think its inevitable that I'm bound to have a knock in it - I've just gotta try my best to not do it! lol

I was thinking about the pass plus but dont think i'm gonna bother now. Instead, I think I'm gonna do a 2 hour motorway lesson, and then an IAM driving course :D
#19
My first set of wheels was a hand painted Morris 100 van ..with no heater...youngsters today in their posh motors!!!!!
#20
My first car was a Metro 1.1S which I drove for many years.

Since I was doing a lot of miles I went for a Skoda Octavia TDI which was a pretty good car but recently sold it to get something a bit newer and slightly better spec.

Having a lot of trouble finding what I'm looking for, you don't realise quite how dependent you are on your car until you don't have it.

Ah yes back when we had our very first pride and enjoy, i've always been the lucky one coz my dad and my sister both get company cars and when they are due a new one they give me their old one! woohoo! So ever since college 6 years ago i've been driving a pretty damn good car, keeping it on the road is another matter altogether.
#22
Yes as an ex car insurance worker, we rejected a few claims due to fronted policies. When your mum/dad says he is the main user and puts son/daughter on as an occasional user but its the son/daughter who drives it really.

Anyhow's well done with the car i'm still learning.
#23
Thank god i didnt go on with my mum!
But, since my car isnt worth alot im only 3rd party, just incase i have any acident.
I wont claim if my car gets nicked as when i rang for insurance he really advised me AGAINST it, as as he said, the claim will be on my file, and make my insurance go up.
But my car wont get nicked bcos
A) no-one wants it!
B) ive got a crook lock fitted, and its also alarmed LOL!

But as you say, im glad i didnt sell my car when i got the saxo (sold on now) as i really couldnt live without my car now, what is this strange word ive heard? Think its called WALK???

LOL!
#24
i wish mine was that cheap! currently paying about £1600 for 10 months fully comp with Bell.

Last year was almost £1800 3rd party with Tescos

#26
Crikey expensive car insurance!!!! Congrats on first car btw! :) I had a fiesta to start off with cas the insurance was well cheap. Me got a new Hyundai Coupe V6 now. WOO YAY! :)
#27
I hate insurance !

24 & have to be named driver on my own car as insurance is just too dear. Still paying £800 as a named driver !!!

Put it in my own name & it was over 2k !

Driving 5 years, no points, no accidents/claims, but the 1st 4 digits of my postcode are the same as a $h!tty estate about 5 mins away from me. Wouldn;t mind but my estate is lovely & very quiet

All is right with the world :)
Had to take my car to the garage today bcos it started squeking/whistling, after the pile of crap saxo i just got rid of (just over a week ago)i was at about crying point thinking omg really cant afford a big job just now (lost £400 on saxo and had work done to it aswell...)
So, took it to the gargage, said the car was low, so hired the suspension fluid or whatever it is, thats what they thought it was - £19.33

So i drove off really pleased, thinking bargain, then came the whistling again!
So i went back, and bcos theyd diagnosed it wrong they did the work for free :)
It needed brake fluid and the front breaks needed cleaning (about £30)
So im really pleased they did the latter for nothing :)

So im really pleased, and back to loving my motor :)
And i asked how much theyll charge to fit a cd player for me (rather them do it than me do it wrong) and they said £10 :)
So im extra chuffed :) And no longer with car worries!

#31
I thought the same but didnt want to say.

lol i dunno how it does it... the most it should be getting is about 300
#33
yeah i do 300 miles per £25. although micras are supposed to have 42mpg with about 10 gallon tank.... so i don;t know. i don't speed off or brake harshly, never push my engine over 60mph... what am i doing wrong???
#34
I've had a Seat Ibiza, Peugeot 306, Nissan Micra and now new shape Fiesta and they've all averaged ~10p per mile so 400 miles to £40. I reckon Rajpop coasts everywhere to get 450 miles out of £25. I don't think even diesels are capable of that.
#35
ok ok...

More Than ... More than my lifes worth is more like it!!

Welcome letter came through today - said the policy was £960 something with £80something installments monthly! Mum rang them up, she wasn't happy and as a result they declined the insurance! Based on the fact mum had a little bump in her motability car in May this year (wasnt her fault but was settled 50/50)

Spent all afternoon and evening trying allsorts of insurance companies. Couldnt get a single quote under £1k!!

So, My parents have helped me out god bless them, loaned me £500 to help pay for insurance but i really really need to find a job!

In the end, went with Endsleigh insurance (go through Zenith I think) and got a quote at £1300. Thats fully comp and I can start earning NCB. The guy on the phone was doing the quotes and it worked out dearer to be at Third Party Fire and Theft than Fully Comp ... so opted for comp.

Why is getting insurance sooo stressful?!! and cost more than the cars worth ¬_¬

Anyway .. Just gotta enjoy myself now and not claim on the insurance! lol
#36
Sorry to hear that Designz. Drive safely and build up your NCBs and you'll be fine.
#37
Thanks :)

I'm hoping next years will be considerably cheaper :)
#38
Im with endsleigh aswell :)
£330 TP only - there well cheap - im with them thru norwich union
