I have a ford focus ghia 1.6 manual that I got last weekend. However, I just have a quick question - the accelerator has a point where you push it down a few inches and then you have to push it a bit more to get it all the way down. Its got a point where you feel a bit of resistance then you need to push it down a bit more. Its not hard to push it all the way down. Its like a kick someone said to me...my question is, is this normal? Sorry if I not explained it very well! Also, I got a three month warranty on the car - would this cover the accelerator? It covers mechanical things it says?

Is it an automatic?
If so, when you get to that point on the throttle and push past it, it should change down a gear and accelerate that little bit faster for you.

sorry its a manual

Sounds like it could be the throttle cable binding in it's outer housing (assuming it is a cable not electronic controlled throttle)

Yep. sounds like the wire inner throttle cable is worn and catching on the outer plastic sleeve.

New cable will fix it, just get a new one, connect one end to foot pedal and the other to your' engine.

Best replace it incase it snaps.

Thanks...is it easy to do? Will ask my friend to do it for me if it is.

I serioulsy wish I never got this car now! One thing after another, it keeps making this smell as well. My friend thought it was the windscreen wash, which did stink so he cleaned it all out - but still getting a bit of a smell in the car. It was like rotten eggs, but now its like smelly feet! Its gross!

That smell may well be the catalytic converter - and that is a common fault.....

Ebay
Item number: 250235615121 is the sort of cable you should need. Easy enough, just remove the worn one and connect the new one the same way.

The eggy smell could be your' catalytic converter (expensive part of the exhaust system) :x

Lol!!! I will get a car smelly thing but is odd as it smells really bad in the car. When you pull away/brake (not sure which) is when its happenning...the smell is not as bad now though

My friend just text as I asked him about accelerator and he says its not a cable, its a switch????

yes, that was re gased in jan by previous owner. It smells even if aircon not on - although smell got worse other day when aircon was on. Part of the smell was the windscreen wash, it has gone all slimy and it did stink...now its not an eggy smell, but more like feet!

Sounds like a combination of cheap smelly screenwash - now sorted. And, a blocked Air Con drain.
Return to garage and ask them to repair it for you under warranty. They will clear it with an air jet.
I take it it ain't from the upholstery?

only got a mechanical warranty...will that be covered though??? I have just emailed him to ask but would have thought air con wouldnt be - also do you think accelerator will be covered?

Also, my friend said the accelerator isnt a cable but a switch? Do you know what that means please? Thanks so much for your help Shambolic!

You can only ask the garage, they would probably fix both as a good will gesture as parts wouldn't cost much, and the air con just needs a drain cleaning? Or bacteria in the air con can also smell vile.

Not sure about throttle electric switch controls either. (I did tell you to avoid a ford remember).

Try googling Focus air con smell, there should be lots of info available.

Thanks for your help, I have repped you. I like fords (had loads in the past with no probs but this car is a nightmare!!!) The air con not such a prob, will see what I can do about that. Its more the accelerator. Its worse in lower speeds when you get faster its not such a problem...but as its not a cable I have no idea what to do about it

Thanks.

Been thinking, I cant see why someone is selling an accelerator cable for a 2004 ford focus on ebay if they don't use them?

Three answers to your' question found here, again a 2005 focus does appear to have a throttle cable..

Also, you'll have to check that its not the accelerator pedal mechanism itself that's sticking at the pivot point (the other end from your' foot). As this can also happen.

Best of Luck. ;-)

My missus had a Focus, and it regularly trumped eggy smells.
Mainly when coming off a dual carriageway or motorway onto a side road then it would crack off a stinker. Was vile.

She has no problems in her 350Z apart from shredding tyres at £250 a pop.

The joys of motoring!

thanks mine is only a 2003 so it should have an accelerator cable, will get my friend to look at it. He seems sure its a switch though :)

bacteria collect in the aircon and cause a smell, kwikfit will clean the system for you, not sure how much tho

I had a similar smell in my Ford Galaxy, As it turns out their was a water leak somewhere, The drivers footwell was drenched and think it was leaking from somewhere under the bonnet. Check all your floor for any sign of water.

Could also be other things like Aircon etc
