My tax on the car runs out on the 31st monday altho im kind of broke till the friday after that, i could ask a member of my family but im not a person who likes asking for loans.

As long as everything else is up to date insurance, mot etc do the police (if im unlucky to get caught) give you a couple of days to hand in the relevant documents etc?

Would it be ok to leave it till the friday of the 4th do you think? its only a couple of days after is gone out of date anyway, plus i dont think ill be doing much driving anyway as its New Year lol

just thot id ask anyway to see if anyone had an answer ....or if Dogcop is on ? lol

I DON'T know how it works. but when mine ran out last month i didnt know untill the 4th after it ran out then ordered mine online.
it didnt turn up untill the 10th.
i didnt get caught though. i wouldnt reccomend it . if you paid online would the money not come out a few days after.. maybe? atleast that way if you get pulled you can show the email saying you have tax your just waiting for itto turn up.

The DVLA send automatic £80 fines out to people who don't renew it and haven't declared their car off the road AFAIK.

If you really can't pay it the best option is to declare the car as off the road and not use it for a few days.

I work for Police. You get no, 'grace' sorry!

But, pay for it with a cheque midweek in a post office, safest option!

As said above, no grace - if the car is not taxed or issued with a SORN (statutory off road notification) it is liable to be clamped - we see them around here all the time in the first few days of the month.

Even if it's not on the public highway, you can be fined :-(

If possible, maybe you can pay on line with a credit card?

Yup, just checking this and it seems that if it hasn't been renewed 14 days after the expiry you get an automatic fine. Not worth getting caught in the meantime though.

I just found this............

Irrespective of whether a car is used on a road the DVLA send out automatic penalty notices to anyone who has not renewed their tax disc (unless they have completed a Statutory Off Road Notice). However, the DVLA delay sending out such notices until 14 days after the licence is expired, which is where the myth that there is 14 days grace probably began.

Which says you don't get 14 days grace but you won't receive a fine within those 14 days where it's not taxed :)

The Police will give you a 'Producer', you will have 7 days from midnight of the day you get stopped to produce your documents at a police station. The problem is that if there is no grace period, the Police will report you to the DVLA at once.

When my road tax ran out I was on holiday & had planned to renew it online, however, I didnt have all the info to put it thru, therefore my tax ran out & I didnt return to this country until mid month because I hadnt renewed it & by then my MOT was out of date I had to get MOT first which I couldnt get an appoint until the end of the month, I phoned the Road Tax department I should have the number if you need it, explained to them altho they didnt say that it would be ok they did say if I got a fine which normally isnt sent out for 14 days then to phone them back & explain. I had my MOT done at the end of the month & had the road tax backdated to when it was due that was a few months ago so far I havent had a fine. Fingers Crossed x

You would get a producer if stopped by police when driving, but if seen parked up, the worst that would happen is they would knock on your door, (if parked o-s) and give you a friendly reminder.
As long as you have an Insurance 'link' on the national computer, they would not remove it with it being 3 days overdue!

Don't worry!

I have got my a week late a few times.... nothing happened to me!

Like I said before, pay with a cheque........... !!!

don`t know what your town is like, but here in Darwen, Lancashire, DVLA actively seek out cars not taxed on first day of every month, and issue instant fines as they have handheld comps to check with DVLA DATABASE, Not worth riskin, i`d borry of family member

Pay by cheque at the post office.

20 years ago, when I first passed my test, I used to try the same and got sussed twice and paid the fine. My mate who is a bobby tells me that he knows by the colour of the disc if it is expired and that is the cue to go and take a closer look. Don't chance it.

It only changes 1 month out of 12, so apart from this month, this technique is no good.

I have always thought you have 14 days grace and TBH I tend to use that either through being very busy or just plain forgetfulness. I have never been fined - yet.
#16
Well we do live in a town with 18000 people plus i wont be using it much as it will be new year next week.
i think ill just wait till the friday before getting the tax first thing in the morning lol
#17
Don't forget there is a " Failure to Display " clause as well.;-)

Which means that not only do have to have a current road fund licence, but it must be displayed as well.

ok saxo my old pal .. it goes like this .. no tax on your car on the road and your liable for a on the spot fine of £60 , offence is No valid VEL ( vehicle excise licence), and get this , if then you think ah thats ok I have had my 60 quid, well if you get stopped again say the following day .. ker ching thats another £60 , but the saving grace is no points on your driving licence, my advice , NO VALID CAR TAX dont drive your car on the road.. end of .. and the 10 days grace period.. no such thing its a lie , just like santa claus or the like..

put your car on the drive off the road and walk about when you have the cash tax your car and job well done ..

I know lots of folk on here think they know the law but if you want to know the real deal and how to save you some money ( this is a hot deals site isnt it ? ) ask the real old bill and you wont get any fluff or half truths
