As far I am aware as soon as the payment is processed you are covered.

But no doubt others will correct me if I am wrong

FH is right.

As soon as you pay you're covered, just put the receipt note in your car in case you're asked to produce or if a nosey parker tries to report you.

Depends when you want to tax it for? You can pay for tax starting September 1st from 14th August. If you are taxing a new car, when you process the payment it will ask you when you require the tax to start. If you select from todays date (8th Aug) you will effectively be taxed from 1st August, as you can only tax on a monthly basis.

failure to display a valid tax disk can incur a fine, so I guess you shouldn't drive until you have received it

I think you can only tax it before it is due online

flowers172 is correct it has to be displayed

I phoned the DVLA a couple of months ago and they told me that you are NOT ALLOWED to drive until the tax disc arrives

As it states at the top:

"If you use or keep a vehicle on a public road, you must display a valid tax disc on it. As the registered keeper of the vehicle you’re responsible for taxing it or making a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) if it’s to be kept off the road.

it IS an offence not to have one on display unless the vehicle is NOT on a public road/highway.
would be just your luck to get a cranky policeman having a bad day.

it wont go through online for some reason.this is the msg i get-

Unable to Use Service

Unfortunately, because of the tax class of the vehicle or recent changes to the vehicle record, you are currently unable to apply for a tax disc or declare SORN using this service.

You will need to apply for the tax disc or declare SORN at a licence-issuing Post Office® or DVLA Local Office (as applicable for the vehicle) using the reminder (Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration) or the Registration Document/Certificate together with the Insurance Certificate or Cover Note, MOT Test Certificate/GVT Test Certificate (if applicable) and fee.
