Hey im getting a car tommorow - picking it up and paying for it - already put down £1000 deposit and getting it 10am 2morro BUT.....

Ive changed over my insurance details from ym old mini to my new renault clio - i did this on sunday as that was when i got my car - i was hoping the new insurance documents had arrived before 2morro as our postman doesnt deliver till about 1pm so means i have to go late or they might now come at all

Now my query is can i go to the garage pay for the car get the V5 documents - go to thepost office and get a tax disc without the insurance details ( even though i have the old documents with a diff car) -- or will i have to wait until my insurance stuff comes before i can get the car

Im a bit annoyed as its my day off 2morro and then im back working on friday, sat and sun so means i cant get my car till mon

Anyone help?

Daniel

You will need the new papers even though its your name etc..You will need the car reg on both MOT and Insurnace to get tax!!
#2
You won't get your tax that way I'm afraid.
#3
you will most def have to wait for the insurance docs, but it will mean you get a whole month extra on the tax, if you taxed it tomoro it would be valid through to the end of dec, on monday it will be to the end of jan next year, assuming you get 12 months of course.

some post offices accept the insurance company to fax them your insurance, (generally the smaller post offices) yo couldask your post office and ask your insurance company
#5
Yer just saw this on the dvla site
Waiting for your insurance certificate to arrive in the post or update online

You cannot tax your vehicle until your insurance certificate arrives or your insurance cover for your vehicle has been updated on the Motor Insurance Database. You must keep your vehicle off the road in the meantime.

chances are though the garage will want to push it out the door so it goes into thi smonths figures though, stand your ground so you get the extra months tax.
#7
you can get temporary insurance on the net, one day etc, where you print off the certificate, this claims to be legal and valid for taxing a car.

www.dayinsure.com is one, rac do it, as do many other car insurance companies.

Agree with all above that you need the log book, MOT and original incurance certificate to get the TAX!

Have you tried buying it online? If the MID has been updated it will let you buy the Tax online!!

Its I think £260 fine if your car gets clamped!!

Let us know how it goes. Best of luck

Correct me if I am wrong... But I was under the impression that once you have paid for the TAX online you are legally allowed to drive the car!! Can someone verify this please

no - you have to have a valid tax disc in the car to drive it otherwise you get a fine - doesnt matter if youve applied for it or not you have to have it in your car

garages norm tax the car for you
did you not smile nicely at the garage man 4 him to tax it 4 u
#17
getting them to fax it, if the post office will accept it, is likely to be best, and cheaper than day insurance, if you found one for under 21s

well if you tax it tomoro you will get five months and a couple of days, if you can wait til mon you will be better off

I think you'll find that if you have applied online that is sufficient. Put a note in the windscreen 'Tax applied for' and in the unlikely event you are stopped a check by the police to the DVLA website will show you are all tickety-boo.
#20
In my opinion ou can pay the tax online and keep the printout of thereference number DVLA provides at the end of the online process.

Why don't you call up DVLA tomorrow morning and ask them if this is possible.

However it would be best if you wat for Monda nd get an additional month of Tax...

Phone insurane company back up and complain that the documents have not arrived and therefore you cannot pick up your new car, chances are they will fax the document for free, they did this for me when i bought my new car - who are insurance co?

Apparantly there has been a change in the law regarding FAILURE TO DISPLAY A TAX DISC - So you should be able to apply online

A change in the law comes into effect from 1 September 2008.

From this date, there will be an exemption from the offence in Section 33 of the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 (VERA) of not displaying a valid tax disc. This will apply for the first five working days at the beginning of the month in which the tax disc commences.

It will be legal for motorists to drive or keep their vehicle on a public road without a current tax disc, for the first five working days of any month. This exemption from displaying a tax disc applies only when an application for a new disc has been made before the previous one has expired.

Motorists are advised to display the expired tax disc, however, they will be committing an offence if they continue to use or keep the vehicle on a public road without a current valid tax disc after the first five days of the month.

Just go to the post office and give it a try or ask the garage to tax it for you many have done that for me , you could even try bringing your insurance docs for your old car and show those as all they are looking for is that you are insured to drive the car so if your fully comp most policy will cover you to drive all vehicles anyway.

Smaller post offices are better

The guy is only 19 so i doubt he will be insured to drive other cars

In previous discussions I've read on this topic, this type of insurance is not accepted for taxing a vehicle although it may depend on the post office.

I thought that too, but in their faq's on the website it says you can tax your car with it, however me and my pals bought a cheap sports car to fix, we insured it on one of these daily insure sites and on the certificate it specifically said this certificate cannot be used to tax vehicles. Local post office still taxed it

Oh What fun we had in that car

That would've been interesting but the answer is no.. the temporary cover cannot be used in order to purchase a road tax disk. you would still need to provide a full insurance certificate.
