Quick question on car tax.

Due to pickup new car tomorrow, but its not taxed. Once I get the Log book can I simply ring up & tax. I will be insured to drive it & it has vaild in date MOT.

Ive looked on the directgov website, but cant fathom out if I need to go to post office for me to get the tax or if I can ring up/do it online.

Advice appreciated.

just need insurance and mot-you dont need the logbook

I think if you have all the paperwork like MOT and ownership then you can go to the post office, or online and do it, maybe over the phone too and you'll be covered from the day of your choice (so that day if you need it). If a post office is within walking distance that'll be the best thing as you get the tax disk there and then to put on show.

if you drive the car on the road you have to display a tax disc, failiure to do so you will get fined

They wouldn't let me do one by phone as car was still registered to the previous owner,it had to be done at the tax office so the logbook could be updated

you need to take the small green slip from the registration document ( the previous owner keeps the V5) and you MOT and insurance documents to a post office.
#6
can you get the owner to tax it for you and you pay for it?
#7
and i didnt think it had to be done at a tax office if its just owner change?

You can tax in person at any Post Office® branch that issues tax discs.

You will need to take:

* Registration Certificate or New Keeper Supplement
* insurance certificate or cover note – must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
* valid MOT certificate - if the car or motorcycle is over three years old - must be valid when the tax disc comes into force
* the payment for vehicle tax (not needed if your vehicle is exempt from paying vehicle tax)

wish id have asked the garage to tax it for me now & add on to the price. luckily theres a PO about half a mile away so i'll get all docs & nip in there once ive picked it up.

id have rather done it over the phone or online, but seems to be a PO visit.

just phoned DVLA, didnt think theyd be open. I need to goto PO to tax basically. cheers for replies

I think if you tax online your vehicle would be covered and if you get pulled over they can simply check your car reg and it will show up, if they ask why you dont have it displayed just explain to them you just bought the vehicle and waiting for the tax to come in the post if they require evidence just pop in and show them simples.

yeh its just the change of ownership thing. PO will send neccessary docs off for me, but i'll still be taxed.
