Career Advice! What to do?!

I know it's a decision i've got to make, but really just after some advice.

Currently at uni in 3rd year of a Digital Music Creation with Media course. Been in to music quite a lot, and recently learnt a lot about digital media. I can use Flash, Director and such. Also have decent experiance in Web Design, and have good knowledge of HTML and CSS, a little php too. Have experiance in Business and Marketing too from modules at uni. - Thing is though, i don't feel confident or skilled enough in any of the areas to progress in to a career.

I also work in a Primary School, and have had several long placements in Secondary schools as a teacher. Teaching is something i have thought about but i'm still not sure really.

Would like to do some kind of graduate scheme to get me in to somewhere. I would like to work in broadcasting, or working with video or music editing etc.

Anyone got any advice or actually work in any of these fields?!

Thanks in advance. Off to see the university career advisors tomorrow for some help (although don't know how good it will be!).

Think you could go into alot of areas from what you put - I'm kinda in the same position as you but I graduated around 2 years ago and have a Web Design Degree.

If you fancy teaching, you should find a lot of demand for your skills with the new media diplomas being offered. You would need to do a teaching qualification however.

In terms of web design and even music production you should consider that these are often 'cottage industries', with lots of small production companies that don't really go for graduate training schemes. Get some trade magazines though and go through them to identify companies you like and that do the sort of thing you are into. Then contact them and ask for a placement (many won't pay you, but you will get experience)

Or you could try the BBC (very difficult to get in), or a larger production company that has online interests (like Endermol, say).

You seem to have a good set of skills, but the industries you are interested in are highly competitive. Make sure that your portfolio is as good as it can be (the advantage of placements is that you can strengthen your portfolio).

And good luck

With your skills, you could easily get into elearning development, its currently a booming industry, especially in the field of Health informatics.

My brother is a web designer, and currently working for a company in Newcastle. When he did his degree, there was a crying need for web designers etc, however now its just such a competative area. Keep working at your skills though and build up a good portfolio. You will get a good job offer somewhere.

Thanks for the advice. Actually building a portfolio up this year as part of my third year, but it's just i have to pick a certain area to specialise myself in. I have worked in music studios around the area a little gaining experiance, however like you said it is very much a small industry with limited oppertunities. Especially for someone like myself. This music production is going to be more of a hobby for myself from now on, but it's something which i really enjoy doing.

Thought about teaching, in all age groups and still not sure which i would prefer. There are pro and cons to both really and still unsure to what age group i would teach. I will have to have a good think about it and just take the choice if i do decide on teaching.

Wow, give me more information!! Would appriciate it if you could PM me with any information about companies etc.

Well last year i actually made a flash educational game and also educational material in Director and that got me thinking about doing more things like it. Working in a primary school and having say in the ICT side of things i also know how much software, and elearning materials are available and indeed are used by schools.

A £20 a year site license for a piece of software soon builds up once you get it in even 30% of primary schools!
