Carphone Warehouse 50 mins / 100 txt FREE 12 mnth contract. Any good?

Got a month to go on a Carphone Warehouse cashback deal, and all has went very well.

Went through the procedure to cancel and had a call back from retentions.

Had no intentions of taking any deal as I was going to go for another cashback deal.

However they offered me a 12 months free deal. I keep the current number and pay nothing each month, plus get 50 minutes talktime and 100 texts each month.

If I go over I pay 20p / minute , 10p per text. Sounds like a very good deal as I'm not a really heavy user. Minutes can't be rolled over.

I'm getting confirmation in the post, and have 7 days to change my mind as it's another 12 month deal and I can only cancel after month 11 once I've entered into it.

Sounds strange being tied to a 12 month free deal, the only downside I can see is that if i go elsewhere for another deal my current number will be tied to O2 on that tarrif for the duration. That said, if I don't use it I don't pay.

Apparently I get a call around month 11 to discuss how it went (they try to flog you another tariff!).

I can understand that it's only less than an hour a month of talktime, and the 100 texts isn't the biggest deal on offer, but since it's free...it looks a good deal. Since they were losing a customer they at least have the chance of extra revenue if I go over the limits. It's a tempting deal - not loads of talktime / texts but enough to make you tempted to keep with the same supplier.

Can anyone on this deal recommend it for low users? Having not seen the small print of the contract yet so I'm in the dark and therefore suspicious. However, the cashback deals are looking very dodgy with a 'reputable' company E2save now refusing cashback applications. Even the sales guy at CPW said they were'nt doing cashbacks anymore. Although how honest that statement was remains to be seen!

My question is this - has anyone else been offered this deal and how's it working out?

Perhaps Edi can comment? Cheers.

Well I sure hope CPW are still doing cashback deals as I have just taken up an offer of 600 minutes and 200 texts a month for 40pounds - 12 months free with cashback.

There's no new phone involved...it's a straight continuation of my current deal (expiring in one month), but keeping my current number and only paying for calls / texts made outside of the free ones allocated, it might only be 50 minutes and 100 texts but it is every month for 12 months.

Just tied to a 12 month contract.

Batespcm, I don't think the call charges are high - 20p min / 10p text. Unless of course the t&c's say other than that or there's hidden costs.

Do O2 usually give away free phones on this deal? Seems a bit generous of them to give a free phone as well as the free monthly mins/texts?

I know they do it in the form of cashbacks, but there's a monthly fee involved with that and a risk you might never see it, recorded delivery or not.

If this is on O2 I had the same thing last October.

went to cancel an O2 off peak deal and they offered me this same deal, just cancel after 11 months.

my deal was not even cashback - it was £300 credited to my account and a £25/month contract

Thanks elitom,

I was suspicious when I had a text from them telling me yesterday I would be on a new £25 a month tariff!

Why do they not mention this when they ring you? Instead they tell you nothing to pay unless you go over - then tell you that you're on a £25 a month tariff.

Also, I suspicious that they are pulling a fast one - my current deal is due to end early feb, yet they say this new deal takes over tomorrow. I still have to claim my last payment of my current deal in early february, yet how can i do that if they've started a new deal before the current one ends?

Tell them you want the new deal to take over the day after your current contract ends.

check that they will credit your account up front and that its not a cashback claim deal
