Cars dying. Anyone diagnose?

Drive a 1.2 Petrol Vauxhall Corsa Design

Car's deciding it's going to struggle to go into Reverse 1st / 2nd gear. Temperamental as at time's it'll be fine, but half a dozen times it'll cause issues, and will decided to go into 3rd or 4th.

Any one ever had this problem before, and ideas as what it could be?

It drives fine, no problems at all actually driving. oil level fine, no leaks, assume it's the gearbox but to what extent, not sure.

Would just like some knowledge before taking it to the garage if anyone has any?

My thought's exactly, which is why i'm weighing up if it's a specific part of the gearbox or just needs a whole new thing. Car's only worth 2.5k, so is a £700 repair bill going to outweigh chopping in for another car.

Seems there's a common fault on the 2001- with gear box 'linkages'.

its more moronic to ask for advice about a car on a forum with people GUESSING what the problem might be taking it to a mechanic is the only sound advice given so far if this doesnt help then you are beyond help i'm afraid .... here endith the lesson

Sounds more like a clutch problem if its happening with every gear


Just the left hand gears, 1st 2nd, reverse, 3rd - 5th changes fine, but then the least used so you'd expect that.

Adam, it's the 2004 / 54 plate model. So it's not that old.

Yeh the Corsa 2001-2006 is likely to have the same gearbox/linkages clutch etc.

Seems to be a common problem, and a lot cheaper to sort then a new gear box.

Several sites seem to suggest trying this first.

Guy having the same problem.

Read the OP, i've already stated i'm going to the Mech's, asked for some ideas BEFORE going, as to not turn up completely clueless.

Sounds more like the clutch mate , wont be the gearbox .

And to the moron above , he was only asking for advice , there are many mechanics on the board ( myself included) who are happy to give him some advice /knowledge so he can work out if it's worth paying to get it fixed or not , thus saving him a diagnostic fee at the local garage and saving him some money . Correct me if I am wrong but that's what this site is all about . If you don't like the post/topic then don't read or reply , it really is that simple . Now jog on

oh i see so you dont have a clue whats wrong so you'll get some advice from a forum then go to the mechanic and try and tell them what the problem is armed with forum advice and you call me a moron

I had a 2002 corsa which was unable to get into the lower gears.
This turned out to be the gear linkage.
They were made mostly from some kind of plastic, which over time wears away causing the issue. If your car is fully serviced and up-todate, Vauxhall may be able to fix as a re-work.
New one was fitted, made from mostly metal to avoid this. I think it was abotu £150 back then including labour.

I agree, my brother had the same problem on his 2002 Corsa 1.2 SXI - was the Gearbox linkage. Was replaced & now drives fine... Struggled to get it in 1st, 2nd gear & reverse before!

John, if the clutch was the issue, should I still be able to change into gears as normal, just have problems getting the stick into it? I mean I can change from 2 -> 3 -> 4 without any problems at all, and the 'bite' point of the clutch hasn't changed? I thought the clutch only releases the gears? But then you're more likely to know what it is over me!

My 306 does this is in reverse a lot at moment thankfully getting rid of it this week (well I hope).
Crazy there made of plastic though, especially with all the boy racers that drive them.

A lot less cheaper! Only takes a question, if no-one's had it before, then it's my driving, if it's a common fault, as Pr3cious18 seems to back-up, I can feel a bit better about myself!

The gear box link sounds like its going mate, fix asap to avoid ruining the rest of the gear box. There is a link for the one side on the corsas that deal with 1st 2nd and reverse and the other side goes 3rd 4th 5th. The gear link wont cost too much i dont think since a corsa is pretty simple and open.

It isnt the clutch as suggested by another person, as this you feel straight away and can tell because it just goes really and you feel it under foot.

Sounds more like the clutch mate , wont be the gearbox .
Dont know how you came to that conclusion mate, doesnt sound like the clutch atall . . .

If it struggles to get into gear whether engine is on or off, probably linkage. If it only struggles to go into gear with the engine running, but engages as soon as you switch off the engine, then probably clutch.

Is car fully serviced? Speak to Vauxhall. They may contribute towards cost :)

Car is up to date with services. Told me to **** myself basically for any contribution etc.

Second hand box at breaker yard with warranty and someone that is easy paid (They exist now) will fit it.

That is if it is indeed the box

To all above confirmed as Gear Linkage on the Left side, causing problems with the 1st 3 Gears. (1st, 2nd, Reverse)

Gearbox is completely fine, Clutch is ok as well. No damage to the two.

I have 6 Mechanic's and two box builders, kinda blows that statement out the window, we could all be mechanics for all you know

Have a read at my post from a couple of years ago: Here.

Got rid of it now, since the head gasket blew, but it ended up costing about £100 to fix the gear problem.
