Got a problem that is costing me megabucks!! I will try to refrain from swearing because I am angry, also the cat will not be referred to with his real name, not for identity purposes but because he doesnt deserve the respect at this time. (His name is Fabio)

Background info:
My cat has an electric cat flap and in order for it to open, a microchip on his collar activates the lock open when he goes near it.

Microchip - £12.99
Collar - £3.50

The bit that annoys me:
It has been 6 months since we put the flap in and the cat keeps going out and coming in with no collar on. This has happened 3 times now, costing around the £15 mark everytime he loses a collar. Normally with past experience a cat loses its collar every year or so or maybe not at all so the first time it didnt annoy me that much but tonight the cat has come in without a collar on again. Before anyone starts asking how the cat gets in without a collar on it doesnt. It bangs on the flap trying to get in and then when someone hears him we open the door. This is really annoying me and more than that it is costing me money. Anyone got any suggestions or solutions or ANYTHING that can help me. We seem to think maybe the cat is fighting with other cats and the collar is coming off in the scrap. Other ideas lead me to think someone is taking the collar off him on purpose. Then the outside chance may be that the cat gets caught on a branch or a spike of a fence and he struggles himself free to avoid dieing but I doubt this will happens 3 times in 6 months.

Get a normal cat flap.

Cats can usually get collars off themselves by scratching. I'm guessing the cat just doesn't like collars.

Cat dosn't like the collar maybe, does it try get it off in the home at all?

My cat will not wear a collar, almost choked itself trying to get off one of the numerous we tried, have now given up and it doesn't wear one, (got him chipped).

Do you have hedges in your garden or neighbouring gardens or nice trees to climb? Chances are Fabio is getting his collar caught in there and you'll find them when the leaves fall off. Most cats don't like collars but I have found the plastic flea variety seem to be less indestructible than the dapper ones, has he worn a collar since he was a kitten or is it a new thing since you got the catflap?

We eneded up removing a catflap as our daft cat could force his way in or out even if we locked it. He's a sturdy thing with no neck, looks more like a pitbull than a moggie lol!

My cat's happy to wear a collar, but I buy my own ones which are comfortable for him. The magnetic thingy that came with my catflap can just be attached to his normal collar, so there are usually no problems (he lost his collar once, but we had a spare anyway).

Would this help you at all?

Have you tried stapling the collar to his neck?:giggle:

(Sorry, but I'm surrounded by cat owners - their cats insist on using my garden as a giant litter tray - had to buy myself a sonic gun to try & keep them away)

That's exactly why I had to get a magnet-operated cat flap and a sonic alarm thing - the neighbours' cats kept pooing in my gravel and stealing my pussy's dinner :x Cats will be cats!

May be your cat is selling its collars to all the other cats so they can get access to food, a warm bed etc:giggle:

My cat has had a collar since a kitten and when in the house he shows no signs that he hates the collar. We buy the collar that is elastic so he has no accidents. I have checked the area and cannot find the collar at all.
#12
Maybe try a collar without the elastic? All of my cats wear normal leather collars but they don't go out that much... If your cat's out all the time then I wouldn't recommend one for safety reasons :)

yeh he waiting to come on hukd to find out where there is a cat food offer on too.

You know, if your cat's costing you this much money and is going out and attacking other people's cats, perhaps it would be best all round if didn't let it out at all.
#16
I dunno, maybe someone is taking it off. My cat is out 70% of the time so an elastic collar is a must. I couldn't live with myself if I saw it hanging one day because his collar wasnt elasticated so he couldnt wriggle free. I think someone could be taking it off him though, maybe because they think they are clever or maybe someone else has the same flap.

If the cat ain't bothered by the collar then I reckon someone is then taking it off. I think you be best not spend £15 again and either get a new cat flap thats not with a sensor,or you just get up when the cat taps on door. If you don't hear and its out, well soon take shelter somewhere if raining, they not daft.

I suppose you could try knocking on a few neighbours doors and asking if anyone has found the collar!
A long time ago -a lady came to my house and said she had found my cats collar (it had my address on a disc ) . I said thankyou very much where did you find it ? Upstairs on my bed she replied !!!!! I gather he went in there sometimes for a change of bed to sleep on ! Luckily she was very nice and didn''t mind .
