isnt a centrino core2duo like the mobile version of a core2duo ie power useage etc etc

centrino is the mobile version of the core2duo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Centrino
its built specifically for laptops as its less resourcesive which means better battery life for the laptop

the core2duo is the generic core2duo released mainly for pc's but also used in laptops. they are more resoursive then the centrino

spot on .... with laptops getting better specs and being used more, a mobile based cpu was needed to help the laptop perform better .....

i have a pentuim dual core in mine and it gets host easily, as its a pc based cpu .... its always better to go for the mobile version if you can but they are more expensive

Ahhh so its better? some guy was trying to undercut me saying my centrinto core 2 duo isnt as good as the normal core 2 duos lol.

Fae you still play cod4 lol?

nope .... not got xbox or live

the centrino is slower than the pc based cpu but it runs better for a laptop ..... they limit the speed on the centrino to keep the heat to a minimum

its slightly harder to put a huge cooling fan in a laptop

go to ebuyer and look at the prices between pc based and centrino based ....... centrino will be more expensive

Intel make CPUs for desktops and CPUs for laptops, they are different and have different numbers.

You cant put a dekstop CPU in a laptop, or a laptop CPU in a desktop.

So to say "it is always better to go for a moble version (in a laptop)" is pure rubbish.

ALL CPUs in laptops (from Intel and AMD) are mobile versions.

Centrino is a "platform" not an individual component, so you cant have a Centrino Core 2 Duo.

Centrino is a set of laptop components "that work together for a better laptop experience" (marketing hype).

The fact that Intel make all the components that make up the Centrino platform could make you think it was a ploy to make sure all the hardware components in a laptop were made by Intel.

So if you see Centrino on a laptop it means the main electronic components (CPU, chipset, wireless etc) are all made by Intel.

Yet another complete misunderstanding of what Centrino is.

You cant go out and "buy" Centrino.

If you go to the ebuyer site and search on "centrino" all you get is a load of laptops. There are no individual components (like a CPU) marked as Centrino. So as I said, you cannot "buy" a Centrino component.

Centrino is a label given to any laptop that contains Intel electronic components.

As it says on the Wiki article pointed to above:

"It is not a mobile CPU - rather, the term covers a particular combination of mainboard chipset, mobile CPU and wireless network interface in the design of a laptop".

Sorry but you are wrong...

Centrino is a platform, or collection of Intel's laptop components....

A good analogy is when a car is called a Ghia.

You cannot buy a Ghia car component, it is when a car has superior wheels, steering wheel, seats, paint colour, exhaust etc.

So a car company calls their car a Ghia to show it is somehow upmarket or superior.

Same with Centrino.

It is a LABEL stuck on a laptop to show it has components made by Intel that somehow makes it superior (according to Intel).

Intel want people to think it is better to buy a laptop with Centrino on it rather than one that has an AMD CPU in it, which of course WONT have centrino on it.

So it is just LABEL the same as GHIA is a label.

don't worry fae, guilbert is also "slightly wrong" with his statement you can't use mobile processors in desktops or vice versa, many have done so for years,,,

thats not quite correct either, i have a mate with a p4 3ghz cpu that is the same as a desktop cpu and it also uses normal 240pin ddr ram
and yes the battery life is absolute rubbish but it shows you could get a desktop cpu. they prolly dont make em like this anymore but they DID
