I went to Northampton today to trade in some games... about £80 store credit. But the problem was that they said they are not trading or opening as the staff said they haven't got paid for over a week (CEX STAFF) i was so angry as i live in Kettering and my mums ill, so had to get the bus over there... i spent £10 for on the bus journey and over a £5 on drinks (because its hot lol) I then went back later and they said they were closed! does anyone know anymore and has this happened to any of ur local CEX's

The problem is they are only franchises are they not? So CEX (the company) can't do anything about it if it does close, unless of course somebody else in the area wants to open a CEX.
#2
yer thats true m8... thanks for the advice, repped up!
#3
mmm... yet another shop closure in Northampton YAY. We're going to pot :/

As said they are franchised so they're all different.
#4
It wouldn't surprise me to be honest... it's never been totally busy on the drapery and the prices are sometimes alarmingly high compared to other shops like gamestation which is at the top of the drapery and game in the grosvenor.
#5
yer i noticed today when looking round, had a bit of spare time u see and there is a lot of shops which have just gone... hope kettering don't fall into the same boat :(

There was a post yesterday about how a guy got the cheque from CEX online and it bounced because they were liquidating... I wouldn't send anything to them at the moment
#7
Yep... Northampton is falling to bits, the borough council are complete *****s when it comes to almost anything.

Abington street will soon be like a ghost town, the market square just fails, the grosvenor has shops leaving all the time, peacock place is at about 1/2 capacity (dolcis have just left i saw last week) and the promised extension when the bus station gets knocked down hasn't really got anywhere.

But hey, it's northamptonshire.
#8
there prices are high, they wanted £62 for guitar hero 3 (guitar) which i wanted badly, and online there are a few francises which have stock for aerosmith GH for £60 (guitar) it don't make sense lol
#9
yer that bus staion is awful... first time i ever got one too northampton and probably the last lol
#10
thanks robotochan for the advice... repped both u and emasu
#11
I use it every day monday - friday, fun fun fun!

It smells like ****, is falling apart, constantly floods and the escalators frequently break down.

Just great.

Please don't come to Northampton, we're ****!
#12
Glad I drive actually and I had £180 store credit for Northampton which i'm glad I spent sooner rather than later. Wonder if they will have a closing down sale

Aye.

It's just true. It's a shame as generally it's a nice county considering what we have.
#16

#17

No problem... hope it's just a glitch with their payments or something...

The CEX only opened up near me 2 weeks ago! Doh!
#19
so do i, however am going on holiday on sunday and will probably not get as much for the games, also they are quite new... never mind :(
#20
Still waiting on 2 vouchers to appear :w00t: Hope I get them by Monday .
#21
I heard that Northampton (used to me most local to me) hasn't been the same since the big one in bedford opened, Not sure if this is true or not but even bedford 'didn't have time' for my psp slim today :(
#22
what were u trading it in or buying one... also are gamestation still offering to beat CEX prices?
#23
trading it in, i traded in cod4 for £28 and had my psp that i had hardly used, they said they had no time to test it, even though i saw staff just standing about behind the till looking at the celing. so i walked out with only £28 exchange and not the phone i wanted to get from the exchange on my psp :(
#24
ohhhh well if i were u i would use the 28 exchange quite quickly... read the link from page one... it seems like they all might be going under! i wanted guitar hero 3 with guitar, didn't mind if cash or trade as i would have bought a new one from tesco with cash or a preowned one from CEX... all my games were new or rare ones as well and will probably be going down in price soon (even if the company was still standing tall as usual)... e.g donkey kong jungle climber and assassins creed DS both £12 cash or £17 exchange and mario party 7 for £13 cash :( never mind

Since you poted this, the latest poster says this:

The Same thing has happened to me. Cheque bounced as the firm are in insolvency proceedings. I too await to hear from them.

Ohhh, doesn't sound good. If I had a large CEX voucher right now, I'd be making my way to a store to spend it just in case. May just be rumours, but things happen quickly in these kind of cases....
#26
yer just look at choices...
#27
Think how many people are sitting on large CEX credit notes right now. This 'rumour' alone could put them under if there was a rush to cash them in. I nearly exchanged something on here last week for a £230 CEX voucher. If that had worked out, I know where I'd be at 9am tomorrow morning - Preston CEX!

Yes, wise choice. No point taking a chance, especially if there is a 'run' on them based on these rumours. They would just close the doors. If I were you, I'd be there first thing just in case.

Yea, will do.... like you say, it might be just rumours, but then again, I can't afford to take the risk...

Just looking at what I can get now, hehe! At least I can search by store on the website, to see what I want before I get there
#32
It could be a rumour as there was a similar thing happened when Cex moved there E-Commerce centre to another building .
#33
yer it could be... im just saying what they told me, nothing more, nothing less :S
#34
I wouldnt think any of this means CEX as a whole is in trouble, so I am sure everyones vouchers are safe. They seem to have been opening more stores recently. It is a franchise so this Northamptom one is probebly isolated.

Cheqes from them or stores not having cash arent anything new, never been the to place Customer Service.

It's more the comment on Money Saving Expert about none of the 600 staff having been paid in a week, coupled with the information in this thread, that set my alarm bells ringing...
#36
Hmm... my thread has now been locked. Wonder why?

maybe, but don't think so. It seemed to disappear for a while and then came back. Now when I checked it actually locked and marked as spammed... :?

Indeed 600 staff not being paid doesnt sound good, and a pretty big franchise chain may draw more attention than one annonymous post on an internet forum if it were the case.

I would just suggest no cause for alarm
