CEX not replacing GTA 4

Hey,
I bought a xbox 360 yesterday from game and got GTA 4 from CEX. I put GTA 4 in and it says that it is unreadable when the game actually starts. I went in to CEX today with receipt and they said they can't do anything because of the laser burn or something? My other 3 games are working perfectly so it cannot be the console.
What can I do? Do I just have to buy another copy :S

They have to either refund or exchange the game.

maybe your xbox did the laser burn? i'd doubt it though. if you just want it sorted quickly either: rent a copy from blockbuster and switch it (Not recommended) or go to game and get it buffered for £2.50) (they buff the scratches out)

You're in your right to get a refund. Tell them replace it / refund you or you'll take it further.

Used or not the game needs to be in working condition.

Do you not have a receipt? Everything has a 12 month warranty from cex doesn't it? I would take it back to the store and ask to speak to a manger there. They are usually quite helpful at my local store.

I do have a receipt and I took it with me. They told me to come in on Friday when the person who sold me the game will be there. If that person refuses to give me a refund or replacement I will ask for the manager.

You only have 48 hours to get MONEY back otherwise it'sa voucher, go tomorrow, kick up a fuss.

CEX sold you the game, not that particular assisstant.

yeah its onyl 48hours mate, so take it back tomorrow and ask for a replacement at the very least and point out their 48hours no quibbles policy

Mate...ring them NOW...

Demand manager or one of the management team. Tell them the situation and ask what they are going to do about it.

If they say nothing ring Trading Standards...speak to them, WRITE DOWN THE REF NUMBER, ring CEX back, tell em what you've been told and give ref no...

Looks like I will go down tomorrow and get a replacement or refund.
Edit:- I'll phone them now and see what they say.

If you get a replacement, make sure you check the disc for a scratch-free one.

Just got off the phone with someone from the management department. They said that they don't sell discs with that ring arround it so it must be my console and they are persuading me that it is my console but I know for a fact it isn't and I tried telling her that. She gives it that they can't do anything about it. I asked for the head office number and I will call them now.

Did you not check the disc condition as soon as they handed it to you? I do this with any disc whether new or used as ive had new cd's and games with disc scratches on, especially the places where discs and cases are kept seperate.

Go and give them hell kick some butt!

I've lost count of the amount of games I've took in there and they havn't checked the discs at all!

Any data purchase are actually under warranty for 6 years, so consumer direct told me just the other day xxx

Same old story from CEX really. They are a crafty lot.

I bought a 360 last month from Zavvi with a brand new GTAIV. 3 weeks later, the game kept crashing and there was a perfect ring etched into the bottom of the disc.
Luckily i got a refund back on both the xbox and the game. The fella at zavvi said the 360 is really bad for this.
With it not happening with your other games though i dont know. I do know CEX normally check games before buying them off someone and wont take them if there scratched so that's probably why they are insisting it is your machine.
I dont know what else to suggest.

I've heard a few horror stories about CEX. To be honest they sound like a bad version of Cash Converters. I'll never be going in a CEX store. They sound like horrific places, full of junk, and cowboy lying staff.

Yes thats what i said. Exactly same thing happened with my brand new 360 and copy of GTAIV. Maybe the 360 just doesnt like the game lol

Agree totally. I've been waiting since March for them to send me a voucher they owe me. After god knows how many emails, phone calls, attempted phone calls, a recorded delivery letter and consumer direct advice, it's now in the hands of Trading standards. As far as i'm concerned with this sham of a company you might as well go straight to trading standards about it :thumbsup:

If I owned CEX, I would have showers installed for the staff before they go on the shop floor, and metal detectors to remove all the piecings from them..

It is probably decrimintation, but why don't they have any "normal" people working in CEX?

I wouldn't mind if they had a half decent taste in music. Instead i have to listen to headbanging music for the half an hour or so i'm in the queue played so loud they have to shout at you. Strange how all the stores seem to be pretty much the same as well. I just avoid the shop now, just not worth the fuss.

You say its not your console - Well it might be.


My cod 4 wouldnt work kept getting unreadable...however all my other games worked.


Rang Microsoft and they said faulty motherboard...had to send it off.

I think they do have that policy, if not they would have employed me the numb nuts, oh well, their loss, now I just get games cheap and sell them AT cex, lol.

To the OP, if the game has the ring of death around it I beleive Microsoft will fix/ replace it at their discretion if you contact them, cant remember where I read it, do a little google search. if not I will see what i can find on the net for you tomorrow mate.

Think that's only microsoft studio games Mike, and they charge £10 i believe.
