Changing a light switch - what if I re wire it wrong?

I've got a faulty dimmer switch which needs replacing, and I'm replacing it with a standard switch.
All went fine until I took the switch off!!
There are 2 red wires, and there should be 1 red and 1 black.
There are no markings on the back of the dimmer switch, and on the back of the new switch I've got 3 points -COM , L1 and L2.
Logic would say that the 2 wires should go in COM and L1 or L2, but the problem is both wires are the same colour, and there aren't any COM or L markings on the back of the old switch.
I'm worried about wiring it wrong and messing up the electrics in he house. This is such a simple job, but made harder by the fact I don't know what wire is what.
Any sparkies out there? Can you tell me if I wire it up wrong, will it blow the electrics up, or me up, or just simply not work?

Cheers in advance

Does it matter which wire? Thats what I'm holding back on in case I haven't got them right, because of me not knowing which is which.

Damn 2 red wires!!!!!

Simple instruction, put 1 in "Com" and 1 in "L1".

Put the red in C and put the black in L1 or L2 does not make a difference because it is two way
you can use L1 or LC2 for the black as L1 and L2 are really just for one or two way ue and an ordinary switch is one way do does not matter which you put it in

So can you tell me the difference between the 2 red wires? They surely can't do the same thing

doesn't matter.......one red in Com, one in L1

everyone should have a multimeter in their toolbox.....tut tut :whistling:

two red wires
1 is a live all of the time
the other is the switch wire to the light
so
commn is the live all the time one
L1 or L2 (no difference) is your switch wire to the light
you are supposed to have two red ones as they are both live conductors
because one is live continuously and one is only live when you switch the light on
