Changing PS3 hard drive questions

I have bought a new 250 gig hd so I can install most games I have to it and also for linux to play emulators off.

Anyway I know some saves are encrypted like Street Fighter 4 so how do I get them off the drive without attaching a external one(which I dont have)

Also do you need to format the hard drive first with a PC?

Back your stuff up to a memory card or USB drive
Also when it comes to formatting the new drive jsut stick it in th PS3 and get the PS3 to do it, my 500Gb drive took nearly 40 hours to format so dont expect it to be quick, and dont turn it off while its formatting

that answer it for you?

Some save files are locked though and unable to be copied unless theres a way around that.

Not seen any, are you using the Backup function or trying to copy the files?

It seems to be a common issue with Capcom games, as if you google ps3 game saves locked it brings up many threads on it.

Just looked and i get what your saying but you have not answered my question, are you backing up the save games (I.E. copying the save) or doing a full backup?

Just the saves as apart from that just have about 2 game trailers that are easily redownloaded and to reinstall games.

Thats why then if you do a full system backup it should work. Have a look here http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2570/ps3_how_to_backup_ps3_game_save_files/

So that would work? just worried as heard even backing up wont let the copy protected saves work.

It should do (like i said i have not had any protected saves that did not work) but it wont hurt to try, if you do a backup and then put the new drive in and restore the backup, you can see if the saves are there, if not they will still be on your old hard drive.

Also just saw this, so you done this update??? http://www.psu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209039
I know this is a different games but there might be a update for your one ;)

guessing that after the update of the game you will need to load the game and then resave so its saved with the new update files then backup

Also dont forget to backup your trophies to PSN as they do not get saved when you do a backup

40 hours to format!

Just stick new & old drives in your PC. Format new one as FAT32 (will take a few minutes! :w00t:)

Then use Acronis® Migrate Easy 7.0

to copy old to new (takes about half an hour).

Use the 15 day free trial version.

I would have done it in the PC but it was not an option at the time, as I was at my parents for a couple of weeks and there was no SATA down there

Right just installed it but it seems quite tight and the system isnt recognising the firmware and says I have to reinstall v 3.15 or above.
