Charged for pre-order

I pre-ordered something from Powerplaydirect that's not out for a few weeks, I used a Visa Debit card, I checked my account and they took the money straight away. Is that right for them to do that? I spoke to some other people who ordered the same item at the same time and they haven't been charged yet. Is the reason because I used Visa?

Once a company takes your money they are legally bound to supply you the goods or they would be in breach of contract, but yes it is quite normal.

Actually just found this on their site:

When will you charge my card?
We will only charge your card once we are ready to despatch your items, unless you have signed up for Verified by Visa with your bank in which case your card wil lbe charged when your order is confirmed.

Don't remember signing up for that, is it a default?

It will automatically ask if you want to sign up to Verisign if the site subscribes to it and you don't have it already. All it is, is an additional level of security requiring a password to be entered. Generally they ask for 3 parts of the password and they are random so it makes the site a lot safer to use.

Still find it weird that I've been charged for a pre-order, they better have it in stock!

the visa verification should come from your bank ......... both my abbey & my a&l accounts have been signed upto it ......... i got signed upto it by using the tesco website ....

basically you set a password and any site that is signed up to it, should redirect you to a website hosted by your bank, when you go to pay for an item..... your then taken back to the merchant website to finish off the transaction

Yep, I remember that's what happened.

if they have charged you, they are bound by consumer law to supply the goods now ......

whens the game due ??

It's the TE arcade stick for Street Fighter IV due 20th Feb which is quite limited in stock...

This happened with Guitar Hero World tour band pack - via GAME.

I was charged like a week before the item was actually sent to me - 'charged' upon a phantom dispatch I guess.

Did you get them in the end or cancelled and get a refund, how long did you wait?

Yeah I got the item ok. It was about a week between the debit of the money an the item being dispatched.

Powerplay are well known so I wouldn't really think there's much to worry about for you.

I think this sometimes happens because they get the supplier to send the item direct to you to save costs - some company's do that with larger items. A mix-up can occur if there's a delay etc etc.

Guess I'll have to just wait and see then.
