Cheap 5.1 speakers advice and s/pdif advice

I have an old projector and dvd player kicking around that I was considering putting in a caravan.

Can I use a cheap little PC 5.1 speaker set? If so how do I connect then to the DVD player - optical in/out?

Secondly could I connect these speakers to my laptop using the s/pdif (in the headphone socket) output and get 5.1?

Any recommendations for the speakers? Must be small, cheap (cheaper the better - second hand would be OK)

A. If DVD and speakers have optical in/out, buy cable plug them in, may need to set DVD to audio threw optical

Q.Secondly could I connect these speakers to my laptop using the s/pdif (in the headphone socket) output and get 5.1?
A. Can't do this, optical is digial, headphone is anolog, probally best to use headphone to headphone socket.

So I need to find PC speakers with optical in - I assume they are now cheap/easy to find?

My laptop has s/pdif out, which i thought was digital - it just uses the same socket as the headphones - I though the idea was that this could be used as digital out?
